Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which regiment did Sir Raymond Belvedon serve in WWII?

Answer: Larkshire Light Infantry

Sir Raymond served in the Larkshire Light Infantry along with his brother Viridian.
The only other Regiment I can find a character to have served in, was The Welsh Guards, and that was Drew Benedict from "Polo".
2. Who did Sir Raymond compare to 'St John Evangellista'?

Answer: David Pulborough

David is later described as "a sweaty red-faced Shropshire lad with a frightful haircut emphasizing a goose neck and sticking out ears."
3. "My baby is due. Help! I'm in labour." "Oh my God, I'll phone the hospital." What happens next?

Answer: Galena pulls up her dress, revealing a money bag and empties the contents onto the floor.

"This is my beautiful baby. I sell eight pictures. This way I pay no tax".
David, having picked up Galena from the airport, had thought that she was at least eight months pregnant.
4. Two days after giving birth to Sienna Sylvie, Galena dies. Who are the only two others, apart from Galena and Sienna, in the house at the time?

Answer: Alizarin and Shrimpy

Shrimpy was Galena's dog and Alizarin is one of her sons. It was Shrimpy barking and Alizarin screaming after climbing to the roof that alerted everyone to the tragedy.
5. Who was Emerald trying to catch a glimpse of when she first met Zachary?

Answer: Rupert Campbell-Black

Emerald, being only 5 ft. tall, was complaining that she couldn't see over the crowd of women also trying to catch a glimpse of Rupert when Zachary lifted her up by the waist so that she could see.
6. Who are Emerald's real parents?

Answer: Anthea and Raymond Belvedon

Although Rupert is always messing around and Emerald has always fantasised that he is her father in this instance he is not.
Anthea had worked at Raymond's gallery while he was married to Galena and they had had an affair, when Galena died Anthea had already given birth to Emerald and had her adopted. Patience and Colonel Cartwright were her adoptive parents.
7. Who are Colin Casey-Andrews, Emerald Cartwright, Joan Bideford and Rajit competing to build a sculpture of?

Answer: Galena Borochova

Galena was an artist born in Czechoslovakia, she had escaped from Czechoslovakia along with her younger sister, who tragically died just over the border by stepping on a mine. Galena painted many pictures of a horrific nature. To quote the book, "Galena could capture sadistic arrogance in a brush stroke."
Galena and Raymond had met at a party in 1961.
8. Why is everyone so happy when Jonothan and Emerald get married?

Answer: Jonothan has recently found out that he is not Sir Raymond's son; he is David's.

Jonothan had DNA tests done to try and prove that they were not related. The first result came back confirming that Emerald was Anthea and Raymond's daughter and they lost all hope, but on the Monday before Emerald's birthday he gets the results of the other test which confirms that he is not Raymond's son at all.
9. What relationship is Si Greenbridge to Zachary Ansteig?

Answer: Step father

Si Greenbridge married Zachary's mum four years before, knowing that she had cancer. He loved her very much and continued to bring up Zachary after she was gone.
10. Slightly off topic but not really. The book is about a painting of 'Pandora' by Raphael. What are the characters portrayed in the painting?

Answer: Pandora, Pride, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, Fury, Avarice, Lust and Hope

In the the book the password for the "blue room" (where the painting is kept) is a play on these. It actually spells 'PARSIFAL' P-Pandora, A-Arrogance (instead of Pride), R-Rivalry (instead of Envy), S-Sloth, I-Indulgence (instead of Gluttony), F-Fury (instead of Wrath), A-Avarice and L-Lust.
Anthea's nickname that Raymond gave her was 'Hopey'.
