Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Abel Rosnovski's original name?

Answer: Wladek Koskiewicz

At the start of the book a baby is found in a wood in deepest Poland. He is raised by the Koskiewicz family. After much deliberation, they eventually decide on Wladek as a suitable name and he is christened in the chapel on the local baron's estate. He eventually grew up to become Abel Rosnovski after confusion when he arrives in America.
2. Where was William Kane born?

Answer: Boston

He was born on April 18 in the Massachusetts General Hospital. As the book says it "...is a hospital that caters mainly for those who suffer from the diseases of the rich, and on selected occasions allows itself to deliver the new rich."
3. What are William's grandmothers called?

Answer: Grandmother Kane and Grandmother Cabot

They are the two women who ensure that William will grow up properly and eventually be able to run the family bank. They give William his infamous ledger book in which he keeps all of his early accounts and records his endeavours on the stock market.
4. Abel Rosnovski is the son of a baron.

Answer: True

Wladek, as he is known at this early point in the book, is unaware of the fact he is the Baron's son. He only realises the truth at the time of the Baron's death when he sees that the Baron has only a single nipple, just like Wladek.
5. In what year did Richard Kane die?

Answer: 1912

He tragically died in the Titanic disaster during 1912, thus causing his wife and son to lose the person they both love most. It was also nearly the end of William too as he almost went on the ship with his father.
6. Did Leon, Wladek's companion, die before his father?

Answer: Yes

Leon tragically died whilst the Germans were taking over the castle, as he tried to protect Wladek from a soldier's attack. The Baron survived until a long time later after the long imprisonment he endured in his own dungeons!
7. Where did Kane and Abel meet for the very first time?

Answer: At the Plaza

They first meet during the period when Abel is working as a waiter in the Plaza. At the time they don't know each other, however William does notice Abel's silver band and this is eventually what leads to his recognition in the closing chapters of the book.
8. What percentage of shares in William's bank does Abel want?

Answer: 8%

Abel wants the 8% so that he can have the power to call a board meeting. He hopes that he will be able to remove Kane from power. Ultimately, he succeeds and William is forced to leave by the bank's board members. Nevertheless, in this defeat he finally relents and agrees to see his daughter-in-law.
9. Abel and William still hate each other by the end of the book.

Answer: False

Abel and William finish the book without their feud. Although Abel wished he could have properly thanked William for the money to start his hotel chain, they meet unknowingly, outside Florentyna's shop, and accept each other. As Abel says, "It was enough, quite enough."
10. Who opens the Warsaw Baron?

Answer: Florentyna

Sadly, Abel dies before the Warsaw Baron opens so the job of opening it falls to Florentyna, the new president of the Baron group. In her speech she speaks of the sadness of losing her father who she only just got to know again. It is at this sad point the novel ends.
