Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'The Chinese Statue', the main statue is purchased for 720 guineas. How much did the base of the statue cost?

Answer: 22000 guineas

As always with any Jeffrey Archer, story there is always a final twist. In this case, the statue is a fake and the base is a work of art worth 22000 guineas.
2. In 'Old Love', both Philippa and William are honoured by the Queen with damehood and knightship, but did William become Sir William before Phillipa became Dame Phillipa?

Answer: No

These two characters are both astounding academics and one can never quite become better than the other. This story ends tragically over a Times Crossword!
3. In 'Broken Routine', Septimus Horatio Cornwallis travelled home by train; whilst on the train, what two items were part of his routine?

Answer: Cigarettes, the Evening Standard

In Septimus' broken routine he confuses his own cigarettes and Evening Standard for another person's and is ashamed when it is finally revealed that he had been making the mistake.
4. In 'The Century', the main character completed his century by getting over 100 runs.

Answer: True

This is a story about a young man who wants to live up to his father's standard and score a century against Cambridge at Lords. The cricket match is fiercely fought and ends in an exhausting anti-climax which nevertheless is a great read.
5. In 'Henry's Hiccup', where was Henry's honeymoon destination?

Answer: Paris

Henry is a successful man who, after leaving Britain during the war period, returns to find that life as he knew it is very different and his high-society lifestyle is thrown into turmoil. The final twist is definitely unexpected in this story, though is perhaps not as pivotal as others.
6. In 'The Perfect Gentleman', what board game is the focus?

Answer: Backgammon

This story centres on a Backgammon tournament which resulted in the clear favourite losing in a closely fought contest. The main character is a journalist looking for a story and as he delves into what really happened in the match he discovers something is not quite right.
7. In 'A Matter of Principal', what was the name of Sir Hamish's construction company?

Answer: Graham Construction

Graham Construction is trying to build a Mexico City ringroad in this story, but unfortunately Sir Hamish has some problems with the Mexican way of business, as he feels it is wrong, and therefore refuses to co-operate to his own demise.
8. In 'The First Miracle', what fruit did the boy particularly enjoy?

Answer: Pomegranates

This is a story telling of how Jesus was born and is a good religious tale. The miracle comes right at the end in a typical Archer twist. This story was the only entirely fictional story of the whole book. All of the others have an element of truth.
9. In 'The Coup', where are the two companies from?

Answer: Brazil

In this story the two companies are stuck in Nigeria after a coup takes place which prevents anyone from entering or leaving the country. As time unfolds, the company managers, although rivals, become close as they wait endlessly for a chance to leave the country.
10. In 'One Night Stand', what are the two friends' names?

Answer: Thompson and Townsend

This story is about two friends both trying to get the same girl. Unfortunately the girl lives in America and so they make a pact that the first of the two to go to America can win the girl.
