Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening setting of "Cloudstreet" is Western Australia in which era?

Answer: World War II

Despite being set in World War II, the relative simplicity of life for Australian children of that era is highlighted in the early stages of the book, where there is little mention of the war but the children are "chucking bombies" off the jetty in a carefree manner.
2. Sam Pickles wins his pet, Stan, in a bet. What kind of pet is Stan?

Answer: A pink cockatoo

Sam's wife Dolly asks if Stan was won in a mug's lottery.
3. In which activity does the Lamb family participate to help make random decisions, such as who must wash the dishes?

Answer: Spin the knife

They also spin the knife to decide which family member is smartest, which has the ugliest feet and which will be the next Prime Minister. This is not the only form of gambling in "Cloudstreet".
4. Who are the two main supernatural figures that seem to dwell in the library at Cloudstreet?

Answer: An elderly white lady and a young Aboriginal girl

The elderly lady is the former owner of the house, a hard-nosed cheat who agreed to take on a missionary role at the urging of the local priest. The young Aboriginal girl was one who had been taken into the mission, and suicided in the library by drinking ant poison. The elderly lady responded by exhibiting the girl's body to the remaing mission girls before evicting the lot of them.

The elderly lady also died in the library soon after, whilst playing the piano.
5. The Perth community in "Cloudstreet" starts to question what it means to be a real city in the 1960s, stripped of its innocence, due to what occurrence?

Answer: A serial killer attacking random victims

The character is evidently based on real life serial killer, Eric Edgar Cooke (known as The Nedlands Monster) who attacked and killed a number of random people in Perth in 1963. Cooke was the last person hanged in Western Australia.
6. When Sam Pickles returns home beaten up, Dolly asks how much money he owes and if he has some Union mates to back him up. Why, according to Sam, does he not have any back up?

Answer: It is the Union he owes

Dolly immediately starts packing a bag of clothes and shaving gear so that Sam can go into hiding.
7. When Fish Lamb is first revived after the drowning incident, what is Quick Lamb the only one to hear?

Answer: Fish's hurt moan

As the life begins to drain from Fish, he feels as if his soul is being torn away. But then the pain stops and he feels something warm and friendly which he moves towards - but suddenly he is pulled back. Mental retardation is not the only result from Fish's drowning incident - he spends the next 20 years suffering from a pain of the soul.
8. "If the rich gamble, they do it with money filched from the wage earner. If the poor, they play with their children's bread. Where, indeed, is there a class that may gamble and rob none?" Who says this Mary Gilmore quote?

Answer: Oriel Lamb

Oriel quotes it to Lester, after Lester spends a day of successful gambling at the horse races with Sam Pickles. Whilst it is a first for Lester to spend money in this manner, Sam has spent a lifetime gambling, doing far more losing than winning.
9. What is the name of Joel's pub in which the Pickles family stayed in Geraldton?

Answer: The Eurythmic

The Eurythmic was named after the racehorse on which Joel won the money to buy the pub. This continues on the theme of luck, which runs throughout the novel. Joel is able to stay ahead and stay sensible, building a life from his win, rather than consistently losing everything in the way that Sam does due to his gambling addiction. Sam, however, sees Joel as simply being a luckier person.
10. Despite their new red brick house in the suburbs, Quick and Rose Lamb end up living where?

Answer: Cloudstreet

Despite previously hating the place, Rose realises she does not want to be away from Cloudstreet and the Lamb & Pickles families.
The real meaning of home is an important theme throughout the novel, with a strange, somewhat supernatural Aboriginal character frequently appearing in order to guide Quick back home.
