Annie disguises herself as a boy and calls herself 'Hann' so she is able to get aboard Captain Kent's ship. Morris's son, Annie's brother, was killed in an accident which Kent has been blamed for. Annie's plan is to kill Kent, but after careful observation she decides his is not guilty of the crime. Because of this she is able to prevent her father from killing both Kent and Fredrick.

Lord Sawkins is obsessed with his looks. He despises Cutter, the ships doctor, who was in an accident and is malformed. When Sawkins aims a pistol at Kent, Annie jumps between them. Sawkins then goes to stab her but Cutter jumps in the path of the blade and stabbed in the side.

In a rage Cutter slashes Sawkins across the face with his sword. Screaming Sawkins exclaims, "What have you done? You've scarred me. You've made me like you!"
