Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She's David and Clare Power's daughter from 'Echoes' by Maeve Binchy. Her nickname is shared with the name of a well-known Irish river. She is?

Answer: Olivia

Her nickname is Liffey. It was given to her by Gerry Doyle, who, in the book, was in love with Clare.
2. Wally Lamb, the author of 'She's Come Undone' and 'I Know this Much is True', wrote about Dominic and Dessa Birdsey in the latter novel. Which is the correct spelling of their adopted daughter?

Answer: Tyffanie Rose

Joy sent Dominic a letter which a picture of the baby in it. She was Dominic's girlfriend, but left him for Thad, who Dominic nicknamed 'The Duchess'. Cute baby, dopey name, thought Dominic.
3. This is a little obscure, but I wanted to mention them anyway. Emma Horton's best friend from 'Terms of Endearment', Patsy Carpenter, has three children. Their names are?

Answer: Davey, Ariadne and Katie

Davey is the son of Patsy and her first husband, Jim. He's mentioned in 'The Evening Star' as having been divorced twice after being married to two shallow rich girls. We are led to believe that Ariadne is some kind of an activist, as McMurtry mentions in 'The Evening Star' that she had boppped around the Third World and was often seen at Hollywood parties. Katie, roughly the same age of Melanie Horton, Emma's daughter from 'Terms of Endearment' sporadically attends UCLA and stole Melanie's boyfriend.
4. Jewel and Leston Hilburn from Bret Lott's wonderful 'Jewel' lived a quiet life in Mississippi until they moved to California to get help for their retarded daughter. Her name is?

Answer: Brenda Kay

Jewel was disappointed when she learned that the place she had read about was only available to give out information about retarded children. Brenda Kay was enrolled at a special school, and got the help that she needed. This is a wonderful story about the love between a mother and daughter, a wife and husband, a family uprooted to care for another child. If you haven't read it, go to your local library and get a copy.

It's well worth it.
5. This child, who died when she was six, same as the author's own daughter Michele, is mentioned continuously in Anne Rice's novel 'Violin'. Not much is known about her, except that she was a lovely little girl with blonde hair. Her name was?

Answer: Lily

This is a wonderful novel, although not as good as her others. The story of Triana is an enthralling one well worth the read. Triana's daughter Lily died of leukemia, same as Rice's own daughter. Talk about life imitating art!
6. In Eileen Goudge's novels 'Garden of Lies' and 'Thorns of Truth', we are drawn into the story of two innocent girls, switched at birth. One lives a life of privilege and luxury, the other grows up feeling unloved and neglected. They are?

Answer: Rose and Rachel

Both books are wonderful - I loved the story of Rachel and Rose and how their paths met, and how they both fought for the love of the same man. Two excellent books, also worth the read.
7. Fannie Flagg wrote the marvelous 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe' and another of my favorite books, 'Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man'. What was the name of the little girl that lived next door to Daisy in Shell Beach?

Answer: Angel

Angel Pistal was adopted by the brother of her father Claude, and his wife. One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Daisy is at the carnival and notices Claude Pistal trailing her. She's terrified and thinks that he is planning to kill her. He's not trying to kill her, he just wants to know where Angel is.
8. Judy Blume has written a lot of books, some for adults, some for preteen girls. In 'Summer Sisters', Vix Kline and her husband, Gus, are parents of a baby boy named after Vix's handicapped brother. His name is?

Answer: Nate

Vix is hugely pregnant when she visits Caitlin in Rome on her thirtieth birthday. The first, and only, mention of their son Nate is at the memorial service that Lamb and Abby have for Caitlin on Martha's Vineyard.
9. Speaking of Judy Blume, in 'Smart Women', Margo Sampson has two teenage children, a college-bound boy that defines the word 'preppie' and a slightly disagreeable teenage girl. They are?

Answer: Stuart and Michelle

Their names are Stuart and Michelle. Stuart gets in a relationship with the ridiculously named daughter (Puffin) of his mother's friend Clare, and Michelle gets involved with a man that her mother "knew" once, Eric. After Michelle gives herself to Eric, he leaves town and sends her a postcard with a picture of a beaver on it.
10. She's the daughter of the late Lance Devore and his young wife, Mattie. She loves her 'White Nana' and rich, dreadful grandfather, as well as the dog 'Stricken' that she gets from a Happy Meal that Mike buys her. She is?

Answer: Kyra

She's from 'Bag of Bones', my favorite novel by Stephen King. Just READ IT!
11. This little girl's father is a professional criminal, and her mother is a stripper who wants nothing more than to be a good mother to her seven year old daughter. She is?

Answer: Angela

She's Angela Grant from the wonderful Carl Hiassen book 'Striptease'. The book is wonderful, filled with some of the most bizarre characters that you can possibly imagine - Oriental owners of a strip club, a snake named 'Monty Python', and a lonely man who has a crush on Erin Grant, not to3 mention a randy congressman and his midget right-hand man. Read it.
12. In Pat Conroy's 'Prince of Tides', Tom Wingo and his wife, Sallie, have three daughters, ages twelve, ten, and seven. Their names are?

Answer: Jennifer, Lucy, and Chandler

Jennifer flashed her developing chest at her father, who then started chasing her around the house like a Neanderthal. Lucy is the blonde, who, according to the movie 'wants to be a poet like Savannah', and Chandler wants an alligator for her birthday.
13. Danny Deck, a successful television writer, lives a very quiet existence in Thalia, Texas, along with an interesting cast of characters with names like Godwin. A phone call from his daughter T.R., who he never knew, changes his life. What does T.R. stand for?

Answer: Tyler Rose

If you got 'Tyler Rose', good job! T.R., the daughter of Danny Deck is one of Larry McMurtry's most tragic characters, second only, to at least in my opinion, Emma Horton.
14. Rose and Pete, from Jane Smiley's Pulitzer prize winning novel 'A Thousand Acres' have two daughters, who attended boarding school. Their names are?

Answer: Pammy and Linda

The kids at the boarding school gave Pammy and Linda some cruel nicknames, including 'Lamby' since Pammy raised a sheep for 4-H. The book 'A Thousand Acres' is much better than the movie - but the movie is excellent too!
15. In Anne Tyler's wonderful 'Saint Maybe', Ian Bedloe becomes a somewhat reluctant guardian to his sister-in-law's three children. The Church of the Second Chance changes Ian's life for the better, and he takes wonderful care of the children. The children are?

Answer: Agatha, Thomas, and Daphne

Agatha grows up to be a doctor - an oncologist - and married a breathtakingly handsome man. Thomas develops software, and Daphne sets Ian up with the woman that he will later marry - a tall, rangy brunette with a mass of curls named Rita.
16. In "She's Come Undone", the main character, Dolores, becomes pregnant and dreams of the baby inside her womb - whom she aborts against her wishes. What was the baby's name?

Answer: Vita Marie

Having the abortion broke Dolores's heart. It turned out in the end that it would have been a better choice to have left her husband and kept the baby, since he turned out to be a real piece of work.
17. Delia Grinstead, from Anne Tyler's "Ladder of Years", was a young mother of three children when she disappeared from her family vacation. What is the name of her twenty-one year old daughter?

Answer: Susie

Delia was only nineteen when her daughter Susie was born. When Delia walks away from her family, she ends up taking care of a young boy and falling in love with his divorced father. Another wonderful book by Anne Tyler, who as always, is incomparable.
18. In "Fault Lines" by Anne Rivers Siddons, Merrit Fowler is the caretaker of her doctor husband, Pom, her beautiful, fragile daughter, and her destructive mother-in-law, Mommee. What is the name of Merrit's daughter?

Answer: Glynn

Glynn was named after Mommmee, whose given name is Glynnis Fowler. In the book Glynn is described as being a beautiful young girl of sixteen.
19. Back to Eileen Goudge again. In the sequel to "Garden of Lies", "Thorns of Truth", what is the name of Rachel and Brian's adopted daughter?

Answer: Iris

Iris is a mentally troubled young woman who attempted suicide on at least one occasion, which was described in the book. When she was three, she was abandoned by her drug-addict mother in a McDonalds. Being that Brian and Rachel weren't able to have children of their own, Rose arranged it so that they could adopt Iris, who becomes engaged to Rose and Max's son Drew.
20. In Pat Conroy's novel, "Beach Music", the recently widowed Jack McCall flees his native South to Italy with his young daughter. What is his little girl's name?

Answer: Leah

Jack's wife, Shyla, jumped off a bridge when their daughter Leah was only two. Jack needed to escape from his family as well as Shyla's for the sake of their daughter, and in order for him to maintain his sanity.
