Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where do we find James Bond in the opening scene of "Live and Let Die"?

Answer: Idlewild Airport

Bond is impressed with the VIP treatment he receives upon entering the USA via New York. The FBI has gotten him through immigration without the usual delay in checking his passport. In a short time he is taken to his hotel with passport stamped.
2. As James Bond was entering the St. Regis hotel in New York City in the novel "Live and Let Die", he noticed a black Chevrolet cutting off a Checker Cab and speeding away. What was it about the car that really caught his eye?

Answer: it was driven by a black woman

His FBI contact, Captain Dexter, was taking care of Bond's luggage and didn't see it. The woman was dressed as a chauffeur, and in the back seat sat a large man with a grey-black face who watched Bond as the car sped away.
Upon entering his hotel room, Bond found Felix Leiter waiting. He hadn't seen Felix since the Casino Royale affair.
3. In the second chapter of "Live and Let Die", we backtrack to Bond's interview with M. After checking the skin graft on the back of Bond's hand, M tossed something on his desk which was the subject of the present case. What was it?

Answer: a gold coin

The subject of the case was that hundreds of gold coins were turning up in America. M believed they were part of the pirate Bloody Morgan's treasure coming from Jamaica via Florida.
4. After discussing Mr. Big's American machine M mentioned something which really caught James Bond's attention. What did he say about Mr. Big that so interested Bond?

Answer: he was a member of SMERSH

After the Casino Royale case, Bond had declared personal war on SMERSH - an acronym of Smyert Sphionam which means 'death to spies'. He couldn't wait to go up against SMERSH again.
5. As James Bond read Mr. Big's file in "Live and Let Die", he found out a lot about him. One thing was that he was half French and half black, born in Haiti. Another was his name: he was called 'The Big Man', or simply 'Big', which also were the initials of his unusual real name. What was his real name?

Answer: Buonaparte Ignace Gallia

Mr. Big was so called because of his large size. He had served in WWII in France, where he became friends with a Russian spy doing similar work for Russia. After the war Mr. Big had disappeared for five years, presumably to Russia where he was trained.
6. In the novel "Live and Let Die", we find Mr. Big keeps his followers in line by way of religion-Voodoo to be exact. Due to a heart condition he has greyish skin and he has led his followers not just to believe he is a zombie, but the zombie of the God of the Cemeteries and Chief of the Legion of the Dead. What is the name of the God of the Cemeteries and Chief of the Legion of the Dead in Voodoo?

Answer: Baron Samedi

Baron Samedi was represented by a wooden cross with a frock coat and tails draped over the cross beams, and a clergyman's collar and bowler hat on the top as well. Mr. Big had this effigy beside him in his office and it served to keep his followers in line. They believed Mr. Big was only the zombie; the effigy was the real Baron Samedi.
7. In Ian Fleming's novel "Live and Let Die", after breakfast on Bond's first day in New York, he suddenly realized one of the packages he had received was out of the ordinary. What was peculiar about it?

Answer: it was ticking

Bond threw himself behind the couch long before the small bomb went off. It only shattered glasses and made a small mess. The FBI bomb squad found a note which read: 'The heart of this clock has stopped ticking, the beats of your own heart are numbered. I know that number and have started to count. 1234567....?'
8. Captain Dexter of the FBI gave James Bond and Felix Leiter several facts on the Mr. Big case they didn't know. But according to Dexter the FBI's present policy toward Mr. Big was 'live and let live'. Bond said he also had a motto when he came up against a man like Mr. Big. What was it?

Answer: live and let die

Dexter had told Bond and Leiter that Mr. Big's yacht, the Secatur, always docked at St. Petersburg, Florida at the Ourobouros Worm and Bait Shippers, Inc. The company sold bait to fishermen, as well as seashells and poisonous fish for research. The yacht had been searched more than once and nothing found.
9. In the novel "Live and Let Die", Bond and Leiter make a trip to Harlem to find out what Mr. Big's American machine looks like. At the nightclub 'The Boneyard', they are seated at table 'Z', which is rigged to disappear during one of the floor shows. How did it disappear?

Answer: lowered through the floor via hydraulics

Ian Fleming has the reader see Bond and Leiter's progress through Harlem by way of Mr. Big's followers called 'The Eyes'. They report Bond and Leiter's movements to their switchboard operator, Whisper, who keeps the watchmen in the right area. Although Bond and Felix don't realize it, they are being funneled into a trap.

When the table drops, they are held at gunpoint by large strong men called 'Tee Hee', 'Sam Miami', 'Blabbermouth', and 'The Flannel'. Bond is taken to Mr. Big, Felix is held separately.
10. In "Live and Let Die" James Bond was seated in a chair across the desk from Mr. Big. After examining him thoroughly, Mr. Big was able to keep Bond in line without restraint (for a while) with an ingenious device. What was it?

Answer: a gun in his desk

Mr. Big was very cool toward Bond. He hadn't seen a member of the Secret Service since the war and was curious what they looked like. Tee Hee stayed close by Bond, who knew the gun in the desk could be fired at a split second's notice.

Bond gave him a credible story about the search for the source of the gold coins, and Felix being a member of the American treasury.
"Mr. Leiter is a member of the CIA, Mr. Bond". Mr. Big was no fool; he knew much about the case and the people involved.
11. Solitaire was brought into the room by Mr. Big to determine whether the story Bond was telling was true on not. After Bond was tied to his chair, he immediately sensed she was trying to tell him something with her eyes. Unseen by Mr. Big, she shuffled a deck of cards, faced a queen and jack. What did she do with the cards?

Answer: put them together as if they were kissing

James Bond knew he had an ally in Mr. Big's camp. It was obvious Solitaire was being held against her will. Mr. Big said someday he would marry her. "She is too valuable an asset to waste. And besides, it will be interesting to see our children."
Solitaire backed up Bond's story, which probably saved Bond and Leiter's lives.
12. After Solitaire told Mr. Big that Bond was telling the truth, the Big Man reflected awhile. He told the man holding Felix Leiter to 'hurt him considerably, then dump him near the hospital'. Then he asked Bond which finger he used the least. Why?

Answer: he was going to break it

In a scene similar to the movie, Tee Hee began to giggle as he bent Bond's finger backwards and broke it. Bond fainted from the pain, but he was far from subdued. As he was taken down the hall, he got the drop on Tee Hee and threw him down a flight of stairs, which broke his neck. Taking Tee Hee's gun (Mr. Big had given his own Beretta back without bullets) he opened the door to find two men waiting beside a car. Due to surprise, he shot them and took the car far across town, where he called Captain Dexter. Felix had made friends with his guard Blabbermouth, who was a fan of Jazz.

He didn't want to hurt Felix too bad, so he knocked him out and dumped him by the hospital after Leiter had agreed to leak more serious wounds to the newspapers.
13. Due to the havoc Bond created, Captain Dexter was anxious that Bond and Leiter leave New York quickly. Bond was to take a train to Tampa and he and Leiter would investigate the company where Mr. Big's yacht docked. In "Live and Let Die", what train did he board?

Answer: The Silver Phantom

Solitaire called Bond and pleaded to go along, which he agreed to. 'The Eyes' missed James Bond as he left his hotel, but saw him board the train, and a quick switch of personnel on the train was arranged.
14. In the novel "Live and Let Die", James Bond and Solitaire were alerted to possible danger in the train by Baldwin, the porter. They decided to leave the train before they got to Tampa. Where did they get off?

Answer: Jacksonville

When they got to St. Petersburg they were both spotted by Mr. Big's men, and quick calls were made. At their hotel, The Everglades, they found Felix Leiter speechless as they walked in. The Silver Phantom had been stopped near Ocala and their car blown up and tommy gunned. Baldwin the porter had been killed.
15. Mr. Big's yacht, the Secatur, put into port in St. Petersburg at Ourobouros Inc. which did business in rare tropical fish. As Bond and Leiter questioned an unsavory character with a rifle sitting outside the entrance, he swung the gun and shot it. What did he hit?

Answer: a pelican

This was 'The Robber' whom Solitaire had told Bond about on the train trip. She knew a man by that name was the go-between in Florida. Bond and Leiter were now preparing to sneak into the warehouse that night.
16. James Bond drove a Bentley in these early books. According to Ian Fleming Felix Leiter had got hold of one of the few American cars with character. What did Felix drive in "Live and Let Die"?

Answer: Cord

Fleming said the car was 15 years old, which made it about a 1939 or 1940 Cord. In later books Fleming had Felix Leiter driving a Studillac.
17. In "Live and Let Die", Bond and Leiter returned to their hotel after their visit to The Robber to find Solitaire had been kidnapped. After little sleep the previous night and the hectic evening, Bond was exhausted and went to bed. The next morning he awoke to find a note Leiter left the night before which said he was going to visit The Robber again. After leaving his room to look for Felix, he returned to find him nearly dead, wrapped in bloody bandages on the couch. There was a note. How did it read?

Answer: he disagreed with something that ate him

And the PS: 'We have plenty more jokes as good as this'.
This scene was used in the movie "License to Kill" in a similar manner. James Bond wasn't the kind of man to take this quietly. After seeing Leiter to the hospital, he set out for The Robber's warehouse well after dark that night.
18. In "Live and Let Die" James Bond decided to visit The Robber at the Ouroburos Inc. warehouse after getting Felix to the hospital. He used a glass cutter to get in through the glass roof, and entered silently. After remembering Captain Dexter's briefing on Ouroburos's business, Bond had one object in mind. What was it?

Answer: the poison fish tanks

IN another similarity to the movie "License to Kill", the gold coins were underneath the sediment at the bottom of the tank, which was at least half full of dirt. In the movie, it was dope which was being smuggled.
The Robber found Bond and a gun battle ensued, breaking numerous tanks. Bond eventually faked being hit in the ankle, and The Robber had him at gunpoint. As he tried to maneuver Bond over a trapdoor, James realized that had been Felix's fate the night before. But Bond surprised The Robber, who was knocked over the trap door, falling into the shark infested water below.
Bond now quickly left America for Jamaica, where the coins were coming from.
19. James Bond's contact in Jamaica was Commander Strangways in "Live and Let Die". Strangways had already hired a trainer for Bond. He was a tall Cayman Islander named Quarrel who, according to Fleming, had the blood of Cromwellian soldiers as well as pirates in him. Quarrel always referred to Bond by the same name, which was the highest title he knew. What was it?

Answer: Cap'n

Quarrel was training Bond for an underwater swim across Shark Bay to the small Isle of Surprise which was where the Secatur docked. Mr. Big owned the island. It was also where the pirate Bloody Morgan always dropped anchor many years before.
James Bond was going to swim to the Secatur when it docked at the Isle of Surprise and attach a limpet mine, which would solve many problems at once.
20. Ian Fleming conveyed his love for scuba diving into his books. In the case of "Live and Let Die" he used Quarrel's training of James Bond to teach the reader of the many beauties and dangers of undersea life. While Bond was making his midnight swim to the Secatur which was docked at the Isle of Surprise, he stopped about halfway across the bay to check his position. While he rested by an outcropping, something grabbed him. What was it?

Answer: an octopus

There was a small scuffle while Bond freed himself. Even though there was an outcropping above, a lot of bubbles surfaced. Mr. Big told Bond later that he left a nice trail of bubbles from there onward.
21. In the novel "Live and Let Die", James Bond is aware of a commotion in the water as he approaches Mr. Big's yacht, the Secatur, but he is so intent on placing the magnetic limpet mine on the hull soundlessly that he doesn't know what is making the disturbance. After the mine is attached, something hits him on the shoulder. What was it?

Answer: a barracuda

Although Fleming never mentions this wound in any other Bond story, a barracuda has taken a bite out of Bond's shoulder, rubber suit and all. He sees the water is being sprayed with offal, and Voodoo drums are beating very loudly creating a feeding frenzy of sharks and barracuda.
This was the fate of other divers who tried to get to the island before; they had been found washed up on nearby beaches the next day.
22. Dazed and bleeding, James Bond swims for the sea floor in "Live and Let Die" to get away from the shark and barracuda near the surface. He notices something as he nears the rocky ground. What is it?

Answer: a cave

This was the entrance to Bloody Morgan's cave which had been sealed by a rock for years. Bond guessed it must have been rolled away by currents and discovered. He swam into it to escape the shark and was captured by Mr. Big's men.
23. In "Live and Let Die" James Bond is taken into a cave which is packed with gold coins and jewels, booty from the pirate Bloody Morgan. Mr. Big sets at a desk, effigy of Baron Samedi beside him, calmly marking down the treasure as his men pack it in cases. With guards behind Bond, Mr. Big takes Bond upstairs to a cell. Ian Fleming comments that not one coin will be stolen by the men. Why not?

Answer: Baron Samedi is still in the cave

The wooden cross effigy of Baron Samedi remained; only his zombie had left the cave.
Bond is taken to a cell and chained beside Solitaire. Mr. Big tells them of their fate which is very similar to the pirate method of keelhauling. They would be tied to a paravane and towed until eaten by sharks. They will be leaving the next morning when they set off for Florida with more of their treasure.
24. On the island of Jamaica the wind blows onshore to the mountains from six in the morning to six in the evening. Then it reverses. The Jamaicans have a name for these winds. The Doctor's wind blows in from the sea in the daytime. Quarrel told Bond of the other wind, and Mr. Big also names it as they come out of the cave. What wind blows out of Jamaica during the night?

Answer: The Undertaker's Wind

When brought out to be tied to the paravane, Bond says "The Undertaker's Wind it is." He knows the limpet mine is set to go off at about 6:00, the time the Doctor's Wind will begin to blow. He wonders if it might be an omen.

The mine blows up the Secatur just as James Bond and Solitaire are nearing the reef. Half conscious from the blast, he manages to get them to safety on the reef although they are still tied together. Some of the crew are still alive and struggling toward shore. But the shark and barracuda are having a feast as well.
25. After the Secatur has blown up, Bond and Solitaire get to the coral reef, where they stand, bleeding and half knocked out by the blast. In the book "Live and Let Die", Mr. Big surfaces and begins to swim toward them, attempting to escape the predatory fish which are feasting on the rest of the crew. He doesn't make it to the reef. What actually killed him?

Answer: shark

While swimming toward Bond who stood on the reef, Mr. Big was hit by barracuda and was struggling with his heart problem. But it was a shark which actually killed him before he got to safety in the reef. Quarrel was the first to reach Bond and Solitaire on the reef in his canoe.
M gives Bond two weeks 'passionate' leave after his and Solitaire's wounds are treated by Quarrel. Bond assumed the telegram should have read 'compassionate'.
