Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the Land does Thomas Covenant first appear after being summonsed?

Answer: Kiril Thendor

Thomas Covenant is summoned to the Land by Drool Rockworm to Kiril Thendor, Heart of Thunder in Mount Thunder. However, he is there for a very short amount of time before Lord Foul transports him to Kevin's Watch where he (Lord Foul) gives Covenant a message for the Lords of the Land. Garrotting Deep is a significant place in book two of the first chronicles. Isenguard is from the writings of Tolkien and not relevant to the Unbeliever.
2. Thomas Covenant is referred to as the Unbeliever. However he has another sobriquet based on what he carries but tries to hide; what is this name?

Answer: White Gold Wielder

The Unbeliever wears a ring of white gold. It is his wedding ring although his wife left him and took their son when Thomas was diagnosed with leprosy. In the Land, white gold is outside of the creation and has immense power. The possession of the white gold is why Thomas Covenant was the one who was summonsed.
Stormbringer is the sword of Elric of Melnibone, Sharplance is the nickname of a minor character in the "Gardens of the Moon" by Steven Erikson and the sunbane is of significance in the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.
3. The previous attempt of Lord Foul to control the Land resulted in the desolation. Prior to the desolation, the High Lord Kevin hid the seven wards of lore. To whom did he entrust the first ward?

Answer: Giants

In the many years since they received it from the giants, the first ward has been studied but not mastered by the Lords. Each ward is intended to give instructions as to how to find the next. The quest in Lord Foul's Bane results in the finding of the second ward.
4. Thomas Covenant is escorted towards Revelstone so that he may deliver a message from Lord Foul. As part of this journey, he is taken on board a boat steered by the giant, Saltheart Foamfollower. On which river does this occur?

Answer: Soulease River

For the first part of the journey Covenant is escorted from Mithil Stonedown over the Andelianuan Hills by Atiarian Trell-mate, a tense journey since Covenant has raped her daughter. As they reach the Soulease River, Saltheart Foamfollower is heading upstream to the Council of Lords at Revelstone. The boat, described as a skiff is powered by the songs of the giant. The Mithil River is earlier in the tale, close to Kevin's Watch and Mithil Stonedown, where The unbelievers journey starts.
The river Ar can be found in the Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock, which tells of Elric's first leaving Melnibone and gaining the sword Stormbringer.
The River Ankh is found flowing (although that might be too fluid a word) on Discworld as described by Terry Pratchett.
5. Following Thomas Covenant's delivery of the message from Lord Foul to the Lords in Revelstone it is determined to commence a quest. What is the quest set to obtain?

Answer: Staff of Law

The message conveyed from Lord Foul to the Lords via Thomas Covenant in part states that the Staff of Law has been found by Drool Rockworm and that if the Lords do not manage to take it, then Droll Rockworm will be enthroned in Revelstone in 2 years. But even if they do regain it, the message claims that Lord Foul will be in control in 49 years.
The Arch of Time is an important artefact in the creation of the Land. Amongst other things it prevents the Creator of the Land directly interfering with the actions of Lord Foul, although he can do so indirectly and did so by causing Thomas Covenant to be summoned.
The Mirror of Memory is from the first tales of Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock and the Total Perspective Vortex from the writings of Douglas Adams.
6. At the time of the Unbelievers' arrival at Revelstone, there are five Lords. The High Lord Prothall and three more depart on the quest. Which of the Lords remains in Revelstone?

Answer: Osondrea

Initially only the Lords Prothal and Mhoram are intended to follow the quest. As the company to set out on the quest is gathering to depart, the Lords Variol Taramantha-mate and Tamarantha Variol-mate decide that they can better serve the Land by going on the quest.
7. During his travel to Revelstone and at the start of the quest, how is Covenant tracked by Drool Rockworm?

Answer: His boots

His boots, which are alien to the Land, are the means by which Drool Rockworm, using the Staff of Law tracks Thomas Covenant. These boots were brought with the unbeliever from our world and he is reluctant to lose one of his few connections to the world he is familiar with.

The tracking manifests itself in sudden painful and debilitating attacks. Soon after the start of the quest Lord Mhoram identifies the cause and from then on the ur-Lord wears only boots and clothing from the Land.
8. At the end of the quest, the company has obtained the artefact. But those who have survived so far are beset on all sides by the forces of Drool Rockworm. What does the High Lord summon to defeat the threatening army of ur-Viles and Cavewights?

Answer: Fire-Lions

The fire-lions are both living stone and fire, described as moving like molten stone. The description reminds me of molten lava, but with self will. Not totally sentient as they also surge towards the location of the questors threatening the last remaining members of the company.
The only griffons in the tale fight on the side of Lord Foul. Wraiths are mentioned but not in the vicinity of Mount Thunder. No dragons were mentioned in the book "Lord Foul's Bane".
9. At the last stand on the slopes of Mount Thunder, the forces of Drool Rockworm are vanquished. The survivors of the quest are now in turn at risk from their saviours. Who summons the Ranyhan enabling the escape of the remaining members of the party?

Answer: Ur-Lord Thomas Covenant

The Ranyhan are strong, powerful horses. They cannot be simply ridden they choose who, if anyone they will accept as riders. They also have the strange ability to know when they will be called and set off in advance so they appear when summoned. They acknowledge the unbeliever as a powerful person and respond en-masse to his call. Manethrall Lithe is a member of the Ramen, a people who serve the Ranyhan.

The High Lord, for all his knowledge and lore has no mastery over the Ranyhan. Gravin Threndor is another name for Mount Thunder where this scene is played out.
10. As the Ranyhan appear to take the party away from their impending doom, Thomas Covenant starts to fade from the Land and return to his own (and our own) earth. This is due to whose death in the Land?

Answer: Drool Rockworm

Thomas Covenants stay in the Land ceases on the death of his summoner. In this case Drool Rockworm, although both Lord Foul and the Creator have influenced the process, it is the direct summons of the Cavewight, who dies on Mount Thunder, that sends the unbeliever back to his own world.
