Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How were Bilbo and Frodo Baggins related?

Answer: they were distant cousins

Frodo was related to Bilbo in more than one way: his paternal grandfather Largo was the brother of Bilbo's paternal grandfather Mungo. Bilbo's mother Belladonna Took was also the sister of Frodo's maternal grandmother Mirabella. See the Family Trees in 'Return of the King' for full details.
2. Which of these pairs is the odd one out?

Answer: Meriadoc and Rorimac Brandybuck

'Old Rory' was Merry's grandfather. The others are all father-son pairs. Merry's father was Saradoc.
3. Aragorn and Arwen were related by blood before they married.

Answer: True

Elrond and his brother Elros were offered the choice between life as mortal men or as elves. Elrond chose to remain an elf, and his daughter was Arwen. Elros chose mortality, and became the first King of Numenor, and founder of the Dunedain. Aragorn descended directly from him, through Elendil, so he was in fact a very distant cousin of Arwen.
4. Which of these sentences is true about Galadriel?

Answer: Galadriel was Arwen's grandmother

Galadriel and Celeborn's daughter Celebrian was married to Elrond, and was Arwen's mother.
5. Which of these is not the name of one of Sam Gamgee's children?

Answer: Faramir

Faramir was a Took, the son of Pippin. Pippin served Faramir of Ithilien in Gondor, and admired him greatly, so it was natural to name his own son Faramir. Faramir Took later married Sam's daughter, Goldilocks. Sam had 13 children: as well as Goldilocks, Frodo, Bilbo and Hamfast (named after Sam's father) he had Rose, Merry, Pippin, Elanor, Daisy, Primrose, Ruby, Robin and Tolman.
6. How were Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took related?

Answer: they were cousins

Merry's mother and Pippin's father were brother and sister.
7. Which character was the son of King Thranduil?

Answer: Legolas

Thranduil was a Sindarin elf, and a kinsman of Celeborn, husband to Galadriel. He was King of the northern realm of Greenwood the Great, later known as Mirkwood.
8. How were Nob and Bob (of Bree) related?

Answer: as far as we know, they were not related

Nob and Bob were hobbits who worked for Barliman Butterbur in Bree. We are never told their surnames. Bob was the ostler, and Nob served in the inn.
9. What relation was Eowyn of Rohan to King Theoden?

Answer: niece

She was the daughter of Eomund of the Mark and Theodwyn, the sister of King Theoden. After her parents' early deaths she was brought up by King Theoden, along with her brother Eomer. Theoden said she was 'dearer than daughter' to him.
10. Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth was related to Faramir of Gondor.

Answer: True

Imrahil features in the battle sections of 'Return of the King'. He commanded the city of Minas Tirith after Denethor died and while Faramir was ill. Imrahil's sister was the Lady Finduilas, who was the mother of Boromir and Faramir.
