Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is a grandson and the original heir (born in III, 2978) of Ecthelion II, 25th Steward of Gondor?

Answer: Boromir II

Ecthelion II was the 25th Steward and father to Denethor II, the 26th Steward of Gondor. The elder son of Denethor was Boromir II (it's funny that Boromir I was also son of Denethor I). Boromir became the heir of Denethor and Captain of the White Tower. Ecthelion died in III, 2984 and Denethor burned himself during the Siege of Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring. Boromir was slain by Uruk-Hai during the quest of the Fellowship of the Ring.

His brother Faramir was 5 years younger and would become Steward to King Elessar. Beregond was a member of the Guard of the Tower.

He rescued Faramir from death when Denethor tried to burn Faramir and himself. Beregond was exiled from Minas Tirith by King Elessar for committing sacrilege of the most hallowed place in the city but was granted mercy (usually the death penalty awaited such people) because he did it to save his Captain and Lord, Faramir. Beregond became Captain of the White Company, Faramirs Guard of Ithilien (There was also an early Steward called Beregond).
2. Who is the father of Aragorn II Elessar, last chieftain of the Dúnedain and King of Gondor and Anor?

Answer: Arathorn II

Aragorn was the son of Arathorn II, who was slain by Orcs in III, 2933. Arador was the grandfather of Aragorn, slain by Hill-Trolls in 2930. Argonui was the father of Arador and died in 2912 and Gilraen was the mother of Aragorn. There was another Arathorn, Arathorn I, who was the father of Argonui.
3. Who is the father of Éomer, 18th King of Rohan, and Éowyn, Lady of Ithilien?

Answer: Éomund

Éomer and Éowyn are children of Éomund, Upper-Marshal of the Mark and Théodwyn, daughter of Thengel and sister to Théoden. Théoden thus was their uncle but loved them as his own children, next to his own son, Théodred, whom he loved very much. Éomund was killed by Orcs before the War of the Ring (III, 3002) and both Éomer and Éowyn were taken into the house of Théoden.

Their mother had died of grief shortly after Éomund's death. Thengel died in 2980 of old age. Théodred died in the First Battle of the Fords of Isen during the War of the Ring. Théoden was killed during the Battle on the Pelennor Fields.
4. Who was the father of Frodo Baggins?

Answer: Drogo Baggins

Frodo was the son of Drogo. Drogo and his wife drowned in the Brandywine river in 1380 (Shire reckoning) and Bilbo, a cousin of the 4th grade from his mother's side and a cousin from the 6th grade from his father's side, took Frodo into his house. Bungo is the father of Bilbo and Balbo is the first listed Baggins in the family tree of the Baggins of Hobbiton (found in "LotR" Appendix C).
5. Who is the father of Legolas Greenleaf of Mirkwood?

Answer: Thranduil

Legolas was the son of Thranduil, King of Mirkwood. Oropher was Thranduils father who fell in the Battle of Dagorlad under Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor of Middle-Earth, who would perish when he overthrew Sauron with Elendil the Tall. Elrond was Herald of Gil-galad and Master of Imladris (Rivendell) and passed over the Sea after the War of the Ring.

It is said that Legolas build a ship and passed over the Sea as well, together with Gimli the Dwarf, after the death of King Aragorn Elessar of Gondor.
6. Who was the father of Gimli, member of the Fellowship?

Answer: Glóin

Glóin, one of the 13 Dwarves that went on the quest for Erebor with Bilbo, was Gimli's father. Óin was Glóin's brother and Balin was his cousin. Thorin Oakenshield was the heir of Durin the Deathless (all four were descendants of Durin I, one of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves) and shortly King under the Mountain, before he was slain in the Battle of the Five Armies before Erebor. Óin and Balin were killed in Moria. Glóin probably died of old age sometime after the War of the Ring and it is said that Gimli went over the Sea with Legolas, because of their deep friendship and his desire to see the Lady Galadriel again.
7. Who is the grandmother on the mother's side of Arwen Undómiel?

Answer: Galadriel

Celebrían was mother of Arwen and daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. Eärwen was the mother of Galadriel. Luthien was the great-grandmother of Elrond, father of Arwen. Interesting to know is that Finrod, brother of Galadriel, journeyed with Beren to conquer a Silmaril from Morgoth, which Beren needed to marry Lúthien. Lúthien died of grief after Beren's death but was granted a new, yet mortal life, by Eru Ilúvatar to live with Beren.

They died after the sack of Menegroth (in Doriath) by the Dwarves. Celebrían was captured and tortured by Orcs in Middle-Earth.

She was rescued by her sons (Arwen's brothers) and healed by Elrond, her husband, but desired to leave Middle-Earth. Galadriel journeyed to Aman, where her mother still resides, after the War of the Ring. Arwen died of grief in IV, 121, one year after the death of Aragorn, in Lórien.
8. Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth was related to Boromir and Faramir.

Answer: True

Denethor II, father of Boromir and Faramir, had married Finduilas of Dol Amroth, daughter of Adrahil of Dol Amroth and sister of Imrahil, who was Prince of Dol Amorth during the War of the Ring. Imrahil thus was their uncle. Imrahil is a descendant of the line of the Dúnedain.

It is also said that some Elvish blood ran through the veins of the Lords of Dol Amroth as it is said that the first Lord, from whom Imrahil directly descended, was a Half-Elf. Galador was said to be son of Imrazôr the Númenórean and Elf-maid Mithrellas, companion of Nimrodel (fun to know, Nimrodel was the beloved of Amroth, Lord of Lórien. Perhaps Galador named Dol Amroth in memory of the husband of Nimrodel, former travelcompanion of his mother Mithrellas).

In LotR, in the chapter 'The Siege of Gondor' it is also mentioned that Imrahil is related to Faramir.
9. Who is/are called 'Iarwain Ben-adar' (Oldest and Fatherless)?

Answer: Tom Bombadil

This is a title given to Tom Bombadil. This character remains the enigma of Tolkien. He apparently existed before the Elves awakened, some six Ages before LotR. Many theories exist about who or what Tom Bombadil might be (ranging from being Eru himself, a Vala incognito, a Maia, an Elf or perhaps a 'spirit of nature'), but all those theories have convincing arguments against them.

The most plausible to me seems a 'spirit of nature', 'something' that exists in the world but is not of the Ainur (like Ungoliant). Eru Ilúvatar was The One, the being that created Eä (the Universe) and the Valar, who in turn created Arda and were its 'Gods'. Morgoth was known as Melkor, one of the Valar, before he turned evil.

Although Eru is fatherless indeed, this title is not used for him.
10. Aragorn is distantly related to Arwen Undómiel.

Answer: True

Yes, this is true. Aragorn is descendant of Isildur, Elendil's heir of Anor. Elendil's father was Amandil, Lord of Andúnië (in Númenor). The Lords of Andúnië were descendants from Silmariën, daughter and eldest child of Tar-Elendil, 4th King of Númenor (her brother Tar-Meneldur became the next King since, according to Númenor tradition, the oldest son, rather than oldest child, succeeds the King.

This was later changed.). This means the Elendil (and thus Aragorn) was a descendant from this 4th King of Númenor and the Númenorian Kings were all descendants from Elros, brother of Elrond and thus uncle of Arwen Undómiel. Elros had chosen a mortal life while Elrond wished to remain with the Elves (both were Half-Elven and had to choose between either their Elvish blood or their mortal blood. Beren and Lúthien were the parents to the first Half-Elf, Dior). Aragorn can be traced back to Arwen, though the relationship is very, very distant. Like Arwen he also would have some slight spatters of Vanyarin, Noldorin, Sindarin and Maian blood from Elros (who can be traced back the same way as Elrond, see Question 2 for that).

But I'm not going to calculate that, that would be *too* much, even for me.
11. Whom did Beren wed?

Answer: Luthien

The story of Beren and Lúthien is the greatest love-story in Tolkien's work and one of my favourites of all of Tolkien. Beren, outlawed by forces of Morgoth, meets Lúthien as he wanders through Doriath and falls in love with her and vice-versa. Her Father, Elu Thingol (Elwë Singollo), is not very happy with her choice and will only wed his daughter if Beren can bring him one of the Silmarils, the Jewels of Fëanor, who are in Morgoth's crown. Beren sets out and is later joined by Lúthien and Huan, Hound of Valinor.

The story of Beren and Lúthien tells how those two, outlaw and maiden, do what no great warrior or army had succeeded in doing before: penetrating into the Stronghold of the Dark Lord. They cut a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown and fled but were stopped by the Great Wolf Carcharoth. Beren tried to use the Silmaril to stop him but the Wolf bit Beren's hand off.

The Silmaril burned inside the Wolf and drove him crazy. Upon return to Doriath, Thingol demanded the Silmaril. Beren showed him the arm and said that the Silmaril rested in his hand this very moment.

Then Thingol came to respect Beren and allowed his daughter to wed him. Beren would later set out with Thingol, Beleg Strongbow, Mablung of the Heavy Hand, and Huan to hunt the Great Wolf Carcharoth. Beren was mortally wounded when he tried to protect Thingol from a charge of the Wolf. Huan and Carcharoth slew each other in the ensuing fight and Mablung cut the Silmaril out of the Wolf and placed it in Beren's remaining hand. Then Beren died. Lúthien died of grief shortly after that and her song of lament moved both Mandos and Manwe, the two mighty Valar, and they counselled with Iluvatar, who gave Beren back his life to live with Lúthien. Lúthien had to give up her immortality (the spirits of dead Elves (Elves either died of grief or were slain, but never died of age or disease) were reborn. What happened to Men, after their death, is not known) which she did and the two lived near Doriath until they died of old age. Their descendants include Elwing, wife of Eärendil the Mariner, who both convinced the Valar to make war upon Morgoth, and their sons, Elrond and Elros.
12. Who was the mother of Elrond and Elros and wife to Eärendil the Mariner?

Answer: Elwing

Elwing was the wife of Eärendil the Half-Elf. Eärendil set out to find Valinor and the Valar. His wife Elwing was meanwhile pursued by the sons of Feänor, who were, compelled by their oath, trying to get the Silmaril. She escaped with the help of Ulmo the Vala, who changed her into a white bird. On her breast she bore the Silmaril and brought it to Eärendil. With the Silmaril, they were able to find Valinor and speak to the Valar. Celebrindal was the mother of Eärendil and Idril was her real name. Celebrian was Elrond's wife. Elwing was a descendant from Beren and Lúthien and thus a Half-Elf (though 5/8 of her blood was Elvish) and Eärendil was the son of Tuor (a Man) and Idril (an Elf) and thus Half-Elven too.
13. Who was the son of Leod?

Answer: Eorl

Leod was the Lord of the Éothéod, who dwelt far in the North and were descendants of one of three house of the Edain, the Elf-Friends (originally this included all men but after the First Age it referred to the three houses of Men that remained friends of the Elfs and were not corrupted by Morgoth). Leod tried to tame the great white horse Felaróf but the horse threw him off his back and Leod broke his neck.

His son, Eorl the Young, became the new King of the Éothéod and hunted the horse down. He demanded the freedom of Felaróf for his father's death.

The horse agreed to Eorl and became the first of the Mearas, great horses that would only allow the King of the Mark to ride them. They understood the speech of Men and had their lifespan. Gandalf the White was the only person, besides a King of Rohan, to ride a Mearas, namely Shadowfax, previously the horse of Théoden.

It was upon Felaróf that Eorl rode to victory on the Field of Celebrant. Fréa and Gram are two Kings of Rohan.
14. What was the name of Shelob's ancient ancestor, the first of the Great Spiders?

Answer: Ungoliant

Ungoliant was a great Spider who poisoned and destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor. Shelob was the last Great Spider, though still many other different descendants of Ungoliant remained in the world. Gothmog was the Lord of the Balrogs (the Lieutenant of Minas Morgul in the War of the Ring also had this name), Carcharoth the Great Wolf that bit Beren's hand of and slew and was slain by Huan. Drauglin was the Sire of the Werewolves, also slain by Huan.
15. And finally, who was the father of Peregrin Took I, knight of Gondor and Thain of the Shire?

Answer: Paladin Took II

Peregrin was the son of Paladin II. The name Peregrin I suggests that a later heir also bore the name Peregrin. Peregrin's son was named Faramir, after the Prince of Ithilien. The Old Took was the oldest Hobbit before Bilbo Baggins. He was Bilbo's uncle and Thain of the Shire. Paladin held Tookland against the Ruffians of Lotho and Sharkey and sent 100 of his hobbit bowmen to aid Peregrin in the Battle of Bywater. Bullroarer was brother of Ferumbras IV, the 24th Thain and son of Isengrim III, 23th Thain.

He defeated the Goblins at the Battle of the Greenfields but did not become Thain since he had an elder brother. Thanks for playing my quiz. If you liked it, please play part 2: http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?id=123070
