Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In '4.50 From Paddington' Lucy Eyelesbarrow finds herself in demand! She has three 'suggestions' of marriage: one from Alexander Eastley on behalf of his father Bryan, one from Cedric Crackenthorpe and...who else?

Answer: Luther Crackenthorpe

Lucy finds herself very much in demand at Rutherford Hall where the Crackenthorpes live. Luther Crackenthorpe, the elderly and miserly owner, is the first to suggest marriage to Lucy. Alexander Eastley is keen to have her as his stepmother, and Cedric also ends up asking Lucy to come to Ibiza with him! Lucky Lucy!
2. In 'Evil Under the Sun', Captain Marshall and Patrick Redfern compete over the lovely Arlena Stewart. But who is the woman waiting in the wings for Captain Marshall?

Answer: Rosamund Darnley

Rosamund Darnley creates a false alibi for her childhood friend, Captain Kenneth Marshall, when she realises that he is suspected of having murdered his wife. A successful dressmaker and businesswoman, she gives it all up at the end of the novel to marry Captain Marshall.
3. In 'The Hollow' there are three women in John Christow's life. One is his long suffering wife Gerda, another is his mistress Henrietta...and who is the third?

Answer: Veronica Cray

John Christow certainly seems attractive to the ladies despite his egotism and bad temper. He treats his wife Gerda quite poorly and has a long term affair with the sculptress Henrietta Savernake. One night at The Hollow, his first real love, Veronica Cray, shows up in his life again to persuade him to abandon his family and live with her.

It is this that pushes Gerda over the edge to murder her husband.
4. In 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles', married couple John and Mary Cavendish are very close to separating. What is the name of the married woman with whom John Cavendish is having an affair?

Answer: Mrs Raikes

John Cavendish objects to his wife's close friendship with the dastardly Dr Bauer, but is himself having a relationship with a pretty farmer's wife, Mrs Raikes. It is only when he is arrested for his stepmother's murder that he and Mary are reconciled.
5. In 'Towards Zero', Audrey Strange has a fairly complicated love life. She was married to Nevile Strange, in love with Adrian Royde (who dies in a mysterious accident), had another man in love with her, and ends up getting married to...who?

Answer: Angus MacWhirter

Audrey is obviously a very attractive woman. Married to Nevile Strange, she was on the verge of eloping with Adrian Royde because of her growing fear of her husband. Adrian's brother Thomas has always been in love with Audrey and goes 'home' to England to ask her to marry him. Audrey, however, ends up marrying Angus MacWhirter, whose failed suicide attempt brings him back to Gull's Point and allows him to save Audrey from being arrested for murder. Talk about a complicated love life!
6. In 'They Do It With Mirrors', both Alexis and Stephen Restarick are in love with Gina. But Gina is already married. Who is she married to?

Answer: Walter Hudd

Gina marries Walter "Wally" Hudd whilst in America during the war. She is content to settle down at Stonygates with her grandmother and step-grandfather, but Wally is desperate to return to the States. His boredom and discontent are shown through his silence and sulky behaviour. The only person he confides in is Miss Marple, who reminds him of his elderly aunt!
7. In 'The Mystery of the Blue Train', Katherine Grey appears torn between two men, one of whom is a murderer. One is Major Knighton and the other is...who?

Answer: Derek Kettering

Katherine Grey assists Poirot by pretending to be attracted to Major Knighton, Rufus Van Aldin's secretary. She is, however, in love with Derek Kettering. who seems to be on the way to changing his own behaviour to be worthy of Katherine. The Comte de la Roche is a ne'er do well charmer who appeals to Ruth Kettering but is not Katherine's type. Charles "Chubby" Evans is married to Lady Tamplin.
8. In 'The Seven Dials Mystery', Bundle Brent is proposed to twice in the course of the novel. The second, happier proposal is from Bill Eversleigh. But who is it that proposes to Bundle first?

Answer: George "Codders" Lomax

Bundle is appalled to find that her pretence at interest in politics has awoken a romantic interest in George Lomax. When he proposes to her, all she can say is "I shan't" before leaving through a window. I've always enjoyed this particular scene in the novel!
9. Tuppence Cowley obviously ends up married to Tommy Beresford at the end of 'The Secret Adversary'. However, she has already received one proposal of marriage - from whom?

Answer: Julius Hersheimer

Julius proposes to Tuppence after being tricked into believing that Jane Finn is not the girl for him after all. She says she'll think about it...but only because he's rich!
10. In 'Death on the Nile' the obvious love triangle is between Linnet, Simon and Jackie. However, Cornelia Robson is the - perhaps somewhat unlikely - recipient of not one, but two, marriage proposals. Whose does she accept?

Answer: Dr Bessner

Tim Allerton ends up with the lovely Rosalie Otterbourne. Mr Ferguson is stupefied to discover that Cornelia has accepted the proposal of the rather unattractive Dr Bessner. Cornelia explains that she is attracted to the idea of being helpful and useful, as well as the fact that Dr Bessner is nice.
