Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A difficult family gathering for Desmond and Deirdre Doyle sets the scene this story. They must face their hapless daughter, who is still struggling to become an nun, a son who prefers the bleak family farm in Ireland to life in London, and other problems and secrets surrounding their family and friends.

Answer: 'Silver Wedding'

'The Silver Wedding' is a collection stories about a family preparing for the parent's silver wedding anniversary. Gradually, as the stories develop, it becomes obvious that the marriage is far from happy and the anniversary itself a sham.
2. This story is set in Ireland in the 1950's. Clare, David and Gerry have all grown up in a seaside town called Castlebay. Clare wants to escape through education. David dreams of a career as a specialist doctor. Gerry wants fame and success.

Answer: 'Echoes'

David and Clare end up getting together, but it does not turn out to be a happy ending. David's parents do not think Clare is good enough for their little boy. Meanwhile, Gerry develops an unnatural interest in Clare, which has drastic consequences.
3. Ria from Ireland and Marilyn from New England are both looking to escape their own lives. A house exchange seems the ideal solution.

Answer: 'Tara Road'

Ria has spent most of her married life making the house on Tara Road perfect, all the while failing to realise that her husband has been occupied elsewhere.
4. Each Friday night the same seven people travel home from Dublin to spend the weekend in Rathdoon. Each of the travellers has their own story to tell.

Answer: 'The Lilac Bus'

Reading short stories like these ones by Binchy is just as good as reading lots of separate books.
5. Cathy and Tom decide to create their own catering business. Their plans are not easy, as they have to cope with family problems as well as the highs and lows of running a business.

Answer: 'Scarlet Feather'

Cathy Scarlet's in-laws do not approve of their son's marriage to the daughter of their house keeper. However, it seems that Cathy is the one responsible for keeping her husband's family together, with no thanks for her efforts. Meanwhile, Tom Feather's relationship with the beautiful Marcella is not what it seems.
6. The village of Mountfern will never be the same again after the arrival of an American man called Patrick O'Neill. The Ryan family run a family pub, but fear it will not be able to compete with the new hotel that Patrick O'Neill plans to build in the village.

Answer: 'Firefly Summer'

Patrick O'Neill has always dreamed of going back to his Irish roots, and he wants to start up a hotel to allow other Irish Americans to do the same. The effect of the move has drastic consequences for the Ryan family, John, Kate, the twins Michael and Dara, Eddie who's always in trouble and little Declan.
7. Benny and Eve have been best friends throughout their childhoods in Knockglen. When they go to Dublin, they meet new friends, including handsome Jack, and selfish but beautiful Nan - whose ambitions get them all into trouble.

Answer: 'Circle of Friends'

The film, with Chris O'Donnell and Minnie Driver, is a good version of the book. However, the ending is completely different. Let's just say, Benny moves on from Jack in the book.
8. Mountview School is the setting of this story, where we hear the tales of individuals who have all been brought together to learn to speak Italian.

Answer: 'Evening Class'

The Italian teacher lives most of her life as a mistress in a little village in Italy. When her lover dies, she moves back to Ireland and decides to share her love of the country with others. We hear the stories of the different people who have come to the class, and watch as they become friends.
9. This is a collection of stories set in the heart of Dublin's fashionable southside, including the story of a society hostess who entertains her husband's mistress, and the story of a student who faces the dilemma of a pregnancy outside of marriage.

Answer: 'Dublin 4'

This is another collection of stories by Maeve Binchy, set in an affluent part of Dublin.
10. This story centres around the McMahons, Martin, his unhappy wife, Helen, and their children Kit and Emmet. When Helen disappears, it is assumed she has drowned in the lake.

Answer: 'The Glass Lake'

The story is about a family trying to survive the loss of a loved one. This is especially true for Kit who blames herself. But this question persists: Did Helen McMahon really drown that day?
