Another quiz on "Mansfield Park". I tried to make this a little more challenging than the other quizzes on this book. If you've read the book recently it shouldn't be too hard.

Answer: Miss Maria Ward

The opening line of the book is; "About 30 years ago, Miss Maria Ward, of Huntingdon, with only seven thousand pounds, had the good luck to captivate Sir Thomas Bertram, of Mansfield Park, in the county of Northampton, and to be thereby raised to the rank of a Baronet's Lady..."

8. William gave Fanny a cross pendant. What was it made out of?

Answer: Amber

He got it for her on a trip to Sicily. Fanny needed a chain to wear it though. Edmund gave her one that was a perfect fit, so the necklace became a reminder of the two people most dear to her.
9. Why did Lady Bertram think Fanny looked so beautiful at the ball?

Answer: She had sent her maid to help Fanny dress

Of course the maid didn't arrive until Fanny was done dressing. Still, her Aunt took the credit, "She looks very well. I sent Chapman to her." And much later in the book Lady Bertram even takes the credit for Henry falling in love with Fanny, "I am sure he fell in love with you at the ball; I am sure the mischief was done that evening. You did look remarkably well. Everybody said so. Sir Thomas said so. And you know you had Chapman to help you dress. I am very glad I sent Chapman to you."
10. Lady Bertram was so happy to hear of Henry's proposal, what did she offer Fanny?

Answer: a puppy

"And I will tell you what, Fanny- which is more than I did for Maria-The next time pug has a litter, you shall have a puppy."
11. Who wrote "Lover's Vows"?

Answer: E. Inchbald

Mrs. Elizabeth Inchbald was the arthor. The writer is not mentioned anywhere in the book "Mansfield Park" (Unless you have a footnoted copy). I found a copy of the play to see what was so objectionable. Oliver Goldsmith had a huge hit with "She Stoops to Conquer" and David Garrick wrote a number of lively farces. John Ford had one play called "'Tis a Pity She's a Whore" that had an unmarried woman pregnant by her own brother. What would Fanny have thought of that one!?

Answer: Antwerp

Laconia and Asp were Captain Wentworth's ships from "Persuasion". The Thrush is William's ship after he is made Lieutenant.

Answer: Mary

Mary died when she was five, when Fanny was already living at Mansfield Park.
14. What gift from her dying sister did Susan and Betsy fight over?

Answer: a silver knife

Mary gave it to Susan as she was dying. Betsy kept taking it to play with, and this caused fights between Betsy and Susan. Fanny bought Betsy a new knife of her own to keep the peace.
15. How many servants in the Price household were mentioned in the book?

Answer: 2

Rebecca seemed to be the servant/maid/cook and Sally was the lower servant. Mrs. Price complains about not having good help. They certainly weren't at the level of poverty portrayed in the recent movie that was supposedly based on the book.
16. What did Fanny do while in Portsmouth to help improve Susan?

Answer: Subscribed to the library

They subscribed to the library and Fanny got Susan to read.
17. What was the name of Henry Crawford's estate?

Answer: Everingham

Everingham was in Norfolk. Sotherton was Mr. Rushworth's estate, Compton was Mr. Smith's Estate, and Ecclesford was where Mr. Yeats was visiting before he came to Mansfield.
18. How long did Fanny stay in Portsmouth?

Answer: 3 months

It was meant to be a two month visit, but it ended up being three months.

Answer: She thought Tom was going to die

She thought Tom was going to die which would make Edmund the heir to Mansfield Park.
