Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All of these novels were written by Alexandre Dumas (pere) except:

Answer: Crime and Punishment

"Crime and Punishment" was written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Alexandre Dumas is one of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. "The Count of Monte Cristo" is a story about vengeance, a man who was wrongfully accused of a crime is imprisoned and escapes later to seek his revenge. One of my favorite quotes is from that book ("Only a man who has felt ultimate despair is capable of feeling ultimate bliss"). "The Three Musketeers" is, of course, about that famous trio of sword fighting men. All novels are now movies. "The Man in the Iron Mask" is another adventure involving the musketeers.
2. Which of these characters is not in "Great Expectations"?

Answer: Mrs. Greggory

"Great Expectations" was written by Charles Dickens. The story is centered on the character Pip, who is also the narrator of the story. It's a story about how Pip grows into age, and he learns that no matter what happens to you, you cannot change the person who you are inside.
3. What is Mark Twain's real name?

Answer: Samuel Langhorne Clemens

Mark Twain (aka Samuel Langhorne Clemens) is the author of famous novels like "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." He is one of the most loved American writers of all time.
4. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated." This is a quote from which novel?

Answer: The Old Man and the Sea

"The Old Man and the Sea", "Big, Two-Hearted River", and "A Clean, Well Lighted Place" were all written by Ernest Hemingway. "The Old Man and the Sea" won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953, and Ernest Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
5. What year does the time traveler get sent to in H.G Wells' "The Time Machine"?

Answer: 802,701

"The Time Machine" is a science fiction novel, about a man who builds a time machine and goes back in time, hence the name. He travels to year 802,701 and meets people and strange creatures. "The Time Machine" is also now a movie.
6. What Jane Austen book has the main character Elizabeth?

Answer: Pride and Prejudice

"Pride and Prejudice" was actually first entitled "First Impressions". "Pride and Prejudice" is about a woman named Elizabeth and her first impressions of people. She sees throughout the novel that she had been prejudiced and wrong about her impressions.
7. Who is the narrator of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"?

Answer: Robert Walton

Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" was published in 1818. She thought of the idea from a nightmare she had after a troubling event. Robert Walton is a character from the book. The story begins with him expressing to his sister, Margaret, that he always wanted to go explore the North Pole.

When he finds a ship and crew, they set out and eventually meet Victor Frankenstein. He tells his life story to the captain (and narrates from chapters 11-14).
8. Which of these books did Emily Bronte write?

Answer: Wuthering Heights

"Wuthering Heights" was Emily's only solo publication. It was published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. She first wrote mythology with her sisters, Charlotte and Anne Bronte, when they were younger. They published under the pen names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.
9. What was Charlotte Bronte's pseudonym when she published "Jane Eyre"?

Answer: Currer Bell

Charlotte Bronte was a struggling writer but when "Jane Eyre" was first published in 1847, it was one of her first major successes as a writer. Since it was easier for men to get published back then, Currer Bell was a masculine name. (She also had two sisters who published under Acton and Ellis Bell.)
10. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness..." This quote is found at the beginning of which novel?

Answer: A Tale of Two Cities

"A Tale of Two Cities" was written by Charles Dickens and first published in 1859. He also wrote "Barnaby Rudge". The quote begins the first chapter ("The Period") of the first book ("Recalled to Life"). The full paragraph is "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."
