Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nellie's daughter Lily almost marries a "right rotter" after she falls for his lies and deceit. Who is he?

Answer: Len Lofthouse

Len lies to Lily about his home and family, and hides the fact he is the father of another girl's baby.
He intends to marry Lily to get her under his thumb and then move away from Liverpool altogether.
When Lily finds out the truth she is heartbroken but relieved she found out what he was really like before she married him.
2. Everyone loves 'Corker' Corkhill, the sailor "built like a battleship" who all the kids call Sinbad. What is his real first name?

Answer: James

James Corkhill is immensely loyal to his friends and is always ready to help out when someone needs a hand.
3. Where does Ellen work?

Answer: Tony's Butchers Shop

Ellen's first husband Nobby Clarke was a violent drunk who terrorised Ellen and their four children.
On VE Day he was so drunk he walked out in front of a tram, resulting in the amputation of his legs. He was declared insane and ended his days in a secure hospital.
Molly and Nellie gave Ellen a dress, did her hair, and persuaded Tony to give her a job so that she could keep her home and family together.
Once Nobby passed away, Ellen was free to marry Corker and her children got a "happy ending" and a Dad who took proper care of them.
4. When Tommy Bennett first mentions Archie to the family, what nickname does he call him by?

Answer: Hooter

Archie's army nickname was Hooter because his nose is on the large side.
Archie is Tommy's hero after he saved his life during the war, and he is best man when Tommy marries Rosie.
5. When Rosie first claps eyes on Tommy Bennett she uses one of "her Mammy's sayings" to describe him. What does she say? (He is ___________ )

Answer: Beef to the heel like a Mullingar heifer

Rosie O'Grady brings light into the lives of all Molly's family and friends when she comes to live with Molly's parents, but her way of speaking out about "indelicate" subjects, thanks to her country farm upbringing, give Molly and her mother Bridie some anxious moments.
From the moment she sees Tommy, Rosie knows he is the boy for her, it just takes Tommy a while to realise she is the girl for him.
6. Ruthie cannot wait to grow up and go to dances and the pictures with her "boy next door". Who is he?

Answer: Gordon Corkhill

Gordon is the oldest of Ellen's sons and has always been the one for Ruthie. Her best friend Bella is dating his brother Peter, and although they have their ups and downs, they end up happy together.
Molly is happy because she knows Gordon is a "good lad" who will never hurt her daughter.
7. When Nellie overhears Elsie Flanagan "badmouthing" Jill and Steve in the street, what does she do to Elsie?

Answer: Pushes her over and throws dirty water on her

Elsie is a wicked woman and Nellie's arch enemy.
Elsie is spreading lies that Jill and Steve are "sponging" from Mrs. Corkhill and living off the old lady.
When Nellie catches Elsie 'in the act' she pushes her down and empties the bucket of dirty water Molly has washed her step with on Elsie.
Elsie is forced to beat an ignominious retreat with dirty water dripping off her, and her false teeth in her hand.
8. When Molly and Nellie open the "Bennett and McDonough Detective Agency" to help Phil, who are they trying to find?

Answer: His paternal grandmother

Although Phil was raised as a Bradley, he hates Tom Bradley and refuses to have anything to do with him or his family.
When Phil left home his mother met him one day and gave him a picture of his real father, who died a few days before they were due to be married.
Molly and Nellie remember his name and manage to track down Phil's grandmother, uncles, aunts, and cousins in time for them to be at baby Bobby's christening.
9. Nellie is (in)famous for her party "turns". Which one of these does she NOT do at a party or get-together?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

Nellie is the life and soul of any party and her 'turns' are legendary.
She uses boot polish and lipstick for Betty Boop, a towel for a nappy for her Shirley Temple "Good Ship Lollipop" and makes a face mask out of blackout curtain material for her Al Jolson.
10. Jill and Steve call their baby Molly Helen, but what do they decide to call her for short?

Answer: Moll

They decide to call the baby Moll to distinguish her from her grandma, although Molly says it sounds like "a gangster's moll" and they should think of something else.
