Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the story opens, Mary must say goodbye to her beloved fiance as he goes off to war. What is his name?

Answer: Bob West

Bob and Mary are engaged to be married when Bob is called up during World War II.
He gets a 24 hour pass to come and see her before he is sent overseas.
Tragically, this will be almost the last time Mary sees him, as he is killed in action.
2. Where do Eileen and Mary work during the war?

Answer: Munitions factory

The friends work on the assembly line in the munitions factory. They make the shells for the troops - a vital and dangerous job.
3. Both Eileen and Mary share their home with their mothers. What are their names?

Answer: Maggie and Martha

Maggie is Eileen's mother, and takes care of Eileen's three children while she works shifts at the factory.
Martha is Mary's widowed mother, and when Mary gets married, she moves with them to their new house in Orrell Park.
4. Mary's mother is taken ill during the events of "When One Door Closes". What happens to her?

Answer: She has a stroke.

Martha has a stroke during an air raid one night. She and Mary are in the shelter in their neighbour's back garden at the time.
Mary is terrified her mother will die, but, fortunately, she survives and eventually makes a good recovery.
5. During the events of "When One Door Closes", where is Eileen's husband Bill Gilmoss?

Answer: He is in a Prisoner of War camp.

During the events of this, the first book in Joan's trilogy about Eileen and her family and friends, Bill is being held in a German POW camp.
Eileen gets very occasional letters and news of him, but he doesn't come home until after the war is ended.
6. Why is Mary's wedding arranged so quickly, at very short notice?

Answer: She is pregnant.

When Mary discovers she is expecting Bob's baby, after he has been killed in action, she is devastated and terrified of the shame of being an unmarried mother.
When Harry proposes, she is at first dead set against the idea, but later, she thinks it over and, both sad and relieved, accepts.
They are married as soon as possible, in the hope that people will think the baby is Harry's.
7. Which of these is *not* one of Eileen's children?

Answer: Tommy

Billy is the eldest at ten, and the only son. He is the image of his father.
Joan and Edna are eight and six during the events of "When One Door Closes".
8. What street does Eileen live on?

Answer: Bray Street

Eileen loves her little house on Bray Street. As we find out in the third book about her, "Home is Where the Heart is" (1993), she is miserable when she has to move away, and overjoyed to eventually move back home when Bill manages to buy the house for her.
9. What does Eileen's son steal from her neighbour's house?

Answer: A tiny kitten

Billy's friend invites him to their house to see the four week old kittens and Billy brings one home with him. He gives it to Joan and Edna and tells them he found it lost in the street.
They are begging Eileen to let them keep it when the neighbour, Cissie Maddox arrives in a temper, and demands it back. It is too young to be away from its mother.
10. At the end of "When One Door Closes", Mary tells her husband she has a present for him. What is it?

Answer: She is pregnant.

Mary has come to love Harry, and is thrilled to be able to tell him she is carrying his child.
