Answer: Aggie

"Mrs. Aggie" is Lucy's friend and she is angry that her mother has left a young child alone in the dark house 'til after 10 o'clock at night.
2. Who lives next door to the Mellors?

Answer: The Pollards

George and Irene Pollard live next door with their sons Greg and Jack. They hear through the wall when Ruby is shouting at Lucy and feel sorry for her. Irene tries to protect Lucy from Ruby as much as she can.
3. What magazine does Bob catch Ruby "wasting money" on?

Answer: True Confessions

When Bob realises Ruby has bought 'True Confessions' he says that the price of the magazine "would have paid for a pair of socks for Lucy."
4. What does Howard have that no other man in the book has?

Answer: A motorcar

Howard is Kate's brother-in-law, and he is a solicitor. He is 'posh' and well off, but not a snob. He loves Kate and wants to help her, so he helps Bob get his divorce from Ruby on the grounds of her adultery with Wally Brown.
5. During the story, Bob enters a certain shop for the first time in his life, and buys something he has never bought from a shop before. What does he buy?

Answer: Fairy cakes

He buys three fairy cakes to share with Kate at work. She gave him a cake when Ruby tried to embarrass him by giving him a "doorstep" sandwich in his 'carry-out' so he buys the cakes as a thank-you.
6. What item does Lucy take from Ruby's bag and hide to stop Ruby pawning?

Answer: Candlesticks

Lucy rescues a pair of carved wooden candlesticks that belonged to her paternal grandmother. Ruby had planned to pawn them but luckily Lucy noticed they were missing and stopped her.
7. What does Titch McBride do for a living?

Answer: Sailor

'Titch' is a sailor, and well over six feet tall. His mother is Mrs. Aggie and she lives for the days he comes home on leave so she can spoil him. Even though he is 40 years old "he's still her baby."
8. Who is Ruby's lover?

Answer: Wally Brown

Wally Brown is a 'ladies man' and is only after 'what he can get' from Ruby. Once Irene and George catch him in Lucy's room though, they make him take Ruby away with him in exchange for not calling the police.
9. What colour are Lucy's favourite jelly babies?

Answer: Red

Lucy likes the red jelly babies the best so the man in the corner shop makes her up a bag of all red ones, just for her.
10. Who does Titch get married to at the end of the book?

Answer: Olive

Titch marries Olive and becomes a father for her son Steve who is thrilled because he loves Titch and couldn't think of anyone he'd rather have for a dad. Steve has had to be the 'man of the house' since his real dad died when he was young, and he and Olive have really struggled over the years.
Once Olive and Titch are married they can look forward to much happier times.
