Question 1 of 10
1. Once upon a time two children, a brother and sister, are left alone in the dark woods after being abandoned by their father and stepmother. After a while the children come upon a lovely gingerbread house and are beckoned inside by an old woman who is really a mean old witch (is there any other kind?). Which dark tale tells the story of how two clever children outsmart a witch? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. A donkey, a cat, a dog, and a rooster have grown old and have outlived their usefulness to their masters. It's time to move on. They travel to the German town of Bremen in order to become musicians. The animals encounter a house with a light on. Once inside, they discover thieves counting their spoils. With some clever sound effects, the foursome trick the robbers into believing that there is an ogre and witch in the house. The robbers flee and leave everything to the animals. What is the name of this tale? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The tale of a young girl who is sent by her mother on an errand to bring food and drink to her ailing grandmother is a familiar one. She begins her journey wearing a red, hooded cloak and carrying a basket of bread and wine. Along the way she encounters a wolf who sends the girl hunting for flowers while he goes in search of her grandmother. The wolf finds grandma at home, gobbles her up, and attempts to disguise himself as the grandmother. He is unsuccessful. The red-cloaked girl is on to him and the jig is up. Name this Grimm tale. Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The first story in the Grimm Brothers collection is the tale of a princess and a frog. A spoiled princess promises a frog that he will become her faithful companion if only he would retrieve her golden ball that had fallen into a nearby spring. As soon as the ball is retrieved she hurries home, the promise forgotten. The frog is really a prince who has been under a witch's spell. Once he shows up at the castle, as a talking frog of course, the king invites him in, much to the chagrin of the strong-willed princess. In a fit of anger, she throws the frog against the wall of her bedroom. Instead of a frog, there is now a prince standing before her. She has broken the spell. Naturally the two marry and live happily ever after. This tale is known by what title? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. It begins with a princess, her waiting-maid, and the princess's horse Falada as they journey to meet the princess's bridegroom. Along the way the waiting-maid tricks the princess into switching places. Once they arrive at their destination the princess is put to work herding geese. The king is suspicious and eavesdrops on the real princess as she talks to an iron stove. He discovers the true identity of the princess and all ends happily ever after. Which fairy tale is it? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This next tale is short and to the point. A stubborn but inquisitive little girl disobeys her parents often. One day she tells her parents that she's going to visit a woman whom they know to be very wicked. They warn her to stay away from this woman but of course she goes anyway. She never returns home. You see, the woman has turned her into a block of wood and thrown her into a blazing fire. Name this tale. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. A recurring theme in many fairy tales is disadvantaged children being made to accomplish impossibly difficult tasks. One tale describes how a young girl is forced to dig peat with a dull tool. Her three brothers, favored by their mother, are treated better. When an elf, who lives nearby, befriends the girl and offers her a sharp knife with magical powers, her work is made easier and faster. One day the brothers, who have been spying on their sister, discover the elf's hand holding the knife. They chop the hand off and the elf disappears forever. By what title do we know this fairy tale? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Two sisters live with their mother in a tiny cottage in the forest. They are kind to a bear who is grateful and to a dwarf who is not. The bear, who is really a prince, has been under the dwarf's spell. One day the bear meets the dwarf in the forest and eats him. The spell is broken. One sister marries the prince and the other his brother. Sound familiar? Name this tale. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. There once lived a king and his daughter. Alas, the daughter becomes pregnant. The king wants to know who fathered the child. He decides that his grandchild should select the father and the child points to an ugly hunchback. The king then abandons the hunchback, his daughter, and grandchild at sea. After all, what's a king to do in such humiliating circumstances? Can you name this fairy tale? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Once upon a time there lived a miller who boasted to a king that he had a daughter who could spin straw into gold. The king was delighted! What a catch this woman would be if she could earn an income spinning straw into gold. With the help of an imp, who wants the daughter's necklace, ring, and first-born child in exchange for his help, she becomes quite successful. Problems arise when the daughter refuses to give up her child to the imp. Name this rather odd fairy tale. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Hansel and Gretel

In reality, Hansel and Gretel are victims of parental abuse. In the original story it was the father and biological mother who left them alone in the forest. Perhaps the later versions switched to a stepmother because it was easier to accept than a mother deserting her own children.

The Grimm Brothers collected the folk tales and published them in 1812. During this time period, northern Europe was experiencing plague and famine. Some historians believe that the parents' abandonment of their children reflected what was occurring in Europe due to lack of food.

Infanticide was common at this time for the same reason.

Answer: The Bremen Town Musicians

Also known as the "Town Musicians of Bremen", this story doesn't seem as dark as other tales. All four of the animals are anthropomorphic, common in fairy tales. Morally speaking, the tale addresses the issues of acceptance of old age, fulfilling one's purpose in life, and the belief that there is strength in numbers. All four animals work together to foil the efforts of the thieves.

However, the animals keep the spoils and the house, which makes them just as guilty of theft as the thieves.

Answer: Little Red Riding Hood

This particular fairy tale has been subjected to many interpretations. Everything about the story has been analyzed, from the bread and wine in Riding Hood's basket representing the Christian Communion to the red color of Riding Hood's cloak that some historians believe represents her sexuality. Even the wolf has been accused of symbolizing the predatory male. Couldn't it simply be a cautionary tale reminding children to be careful out in the world?

Answer: The Frog Prince

"The Frog Prince" is also known by the title "The Frog King". In modern versions the princess kisses the frog. In the earliest versions, such as the Grimms' tale, she either allows the frog to sleep on her pillow, a scandalous allusion to the prince lying next to her before marriage, or she throws the frog against the wall, a violent act by a princess or anyone for that matter.

Answer: The Goose Girl

This story is surprisingly violent. The waiting-maid, posing as the princess, has Falada's head cut off because she's afraid the horse might reveal the truth. When the king discovers that the waiting-maid has been posing as the real princess, he pretends she is the real princess and asks her what the false princess's punishment should be.

Her answer was, and I paraphrase, to be put naked into a barrel studded with nails on the inside, then have horses drag the barrel through the streets until the girl is dead. That is exactly what the king did. Gruesome, isn't it?

Answer: Mother Trudy

This message of this tale is obvious. Children should listen to their parents. However, there's a scarier message here. The child actually sees the Devil in Mother Trudy's window before entering the house. The Devil and Mother Trudy are one and the same. She enters the house anyway, her curiosity getting the better of her. There are no happy endings in this fairy tale.

Answer: The Hand With the Knife

This tale is unusual in that it ends abruptly, on a very sad note. Questions linger. Why didn't the elf realize that it was the girl's brothers who chopped off his hand? Why was the girl, who was clearly appreciative of the elf's assistance and so unfairly treated by her mother, made to suffer to such a degree? What became of the girl?

Answer: Snow White and Rose Red

This is a story of contrasts. The bear is kind, gentle, and appreciative. The dwarf is ungrateful, foul-mouthed, and mean. The sisters themselves have very different personalities. Snow White is quiet and prefers to stay at home while Rose Red is more outgoing and loves to be outdoors picking flowers.

The unity of the sisters is emphasized at the end of the story with Snow White marrying the prince and Rose Red his brother.

Answer: Hans Dumm

Possessed of magical powers, Hans Dumm is the name of the hunchback who wishes the princess pregnant. The hunchback also wishes himself into becoming a prince. The tale goes one step further in that the princess pays her father back for jumping to conclusions.

When he comes to pay her a visit, she places a gold goblet in one of his bags. After he leaves, she sends some servants after him who accuse him of stealing the goblet which, of course, he denies. She eventually confesses what she did and why she did it. All is forgiven and (say it with me)...they live happily ever after.

Answer: Rumpelstiltskin

The only way out of the daughter's predicament is to mention the imp's name, Rumpelstiltskin. She accomplishes this with help from an outside source. What makes this tale a little different is that the heroine isn't especially beautiful or talented. The king wants to marry her only because she can make him a wealthy man. Even that is accomplished with trickery.
