Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does it mean to be 'a Moor'?

Answer: Name given to one of Northwestern African descent.

The fact that Othello was of color is reiterated throughout the story. Phrases such as, 'an old black ram is tupping your white ewe' and 'O, the more angel she. And you the blacker devil!' give reference to the fact that Othello is dark-skinned. It is also interesting to note that before Sydney Poitier and other early African actors, the part of Othello was often played by a white actor.
2. What has happened to the Turkish fleet, in the beginning of Act II?

Answer: They have all drowned.

Although the Turkish fleet was defeated, it was the storm that did them in. It would be inaccurate to say they have been defeated, there was no battle fought, even though that was the intention.
3. What does Brabantio believe caused Desdemona to go to Othello?

Answer: Magic, spells, and enchantments cast by Othello.

The exact quote is thus, '...She is abused, stol'n from me, and corrupted by spells and medicines bought of mountebanks...' Later on, we learn Brabantio dies, but of grief? We are not yet sure...
4. Throughout the play, what adjective generally precedes Iago's name?

Answer: Honest

This is the irony in the play, as the audience knows that he has been the most deceitful character in the whole play! And yet, Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, Montano, and Roderigo all consider him honest!
5. What is the name of Iago's wife?

Answer: Emilia

Emilia remains faithful to his husband until the very last moment, until she realizes that her husband was responsible for the death of her beloved lady. She confesses all.
6. Which of the following does Iago NOT take from Roderigo?

Answer: A handkerchief

It is actually quite humorous to see Roderigo being so gullible. His trust for Iago is astounding but so was the fact that Othello trusted Iago.
7. Finish this very famous line: 'Who steals my purse steals ____ '

Answer: trash

This was said from Iago to Othello. He continues, '...'Tis something, {nothing;} 'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slaves to {thousands;} But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him and makes me poor indeed.'
8. What is the preceding quote "Who steals my purse steals ____ " about?

Answer: Reputation and honor

The irony here of course is that Iago contradicts himself. Before, Cassio says, 'Reputation, reputation! reputation! O, I have lost my reputation! And I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial. My reputation, Iago, my reputation!' And then Iago rightly responds, '...Reputation is an idle and most false imposition...' Hm, does anyone see the irony?
9. Which of these is NOT something we know will happen to Iago?

Answer: Exile

Death is inevitable, even if it is not stated as part of his punishment. The final line said by Lodovico explains Iago's sentence of torture and public ridicule: '...The time, the place, the torture-O enforce it! Myself will straight aboard, and to the state this heavy act with heavy heart relate.'
10. Which of these events does NOT occur in the final scene?

Answer: Iago wounds Cassio.
