Julie watches him from her hiding place, however she comes to his rescue and manages to take him back to the cabin. This scene is the turning point in the novel where Julie truly believes in Zach's innocence.

After Zach is released from prison, Paul Richardson (the FBI agent in love with Julie) barges his way into Zach's mansion and gives Zach a video tape which showed Julie's reaction to Zach's arrest and her news conference, as well as Julie's letter to her family stating she was leaving to be with Zach. Meredith forces Zach to watch the video and it is ultimately Julie's reaction in Mexico City that makes him forgive her.
