Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chapter 22, "Morning In Snowfield", has the ancient enemy singing for its captive audience. Which song is NOT one heard by the remaining survivors?

Answer: London Bridges

The song heard in the film was just "Jesus Loves Me", while the men in bio-hazard gear explored the auto garage. The songs in the book are heard in the Hilltop Inn that served as the headquarters for Bryce and the CBW.
2. When they searched the local church, the men found a priest and ____ young altar boys dead.

Answer: 2

Frank Autry, Gordy Brogan, Major Isley, and two more deputies explored Our Lady of the Mountains church. They found the priest nailed to the cross and two alter boys dead at his feet. Bryce was in a neighboring building, and notified through radio communication so he could have Jenny come over and identify the bodies.
3. A sink full of jewellery was found in the Lange house. Which item was Jenny able to identify as belonging to Dan Kanarsky?

Answer: Cartier tank watch

Dan and Sylvia owned the Candleglow Inn. Jenny knew that Sylvia had given this particular watch to Dan for their fifth wedding anniversary. The watch had no Roman numerals, a unique black face and cost $750. Jenny said Dan loved the watch very much, and she showed Bryce the watch's inscription "To my Dan, Love Syl".
4. The creature tapped into their computer system inside the mobile CBW laboratory. It offered many names for itself. Which of these was NOT one it offered up as its identity?

Answer: Jesus

The ancient enemy had absorbed the fear of demons and the devil from its human victims. It used this awareness to torment the survivors. It even tried to rattle Dr. Sara by calling her all forms of foul names used to describe women. But, it also offered names for itself.

The first name was Countless, and went on to include Rantan, Pallantre, Baal, all the above mentioned and several more. It ended with the claim it was all and nothing, and that it was everything. The creature had acquired an ego.
5. What breed of dog appeared to the survivors in Chapter 33 "Phantoms"?

Answer: Airedale

Deputy Gordy Brogan was the most affected by the sight of the injured Airedale. He had come to realize he should have become a veterinarian instead of a police officer, because he'd always had a way with animals. Lisa was the first to warn Gordy to stay away from the animal and Bryce and Tal followed that plea. But, Gordy would not listen to their warnings.

The animal changed shape about 6 seconds after Gordy touched it. This drone of the ancient enemy killed Gordy Brogan by literally dissolving his flesh. The dog appeared to the gang as a Golden retriever in the movie, but it did not kill anyone.
6. What did the creature send to Dr. Flyte inside the laboratory for the purpose of study?

Answer: a spider

Using the lab computer in Chapter 37 it communicates: "Here is the tissue sample you requested, Dr. Flyte. This is my sacred body, which I give unto thee."
The sample is used to find a weakness. Dr. Sara figures out a possible way to kill the creature, and sends out an order for an oil eating microbe. In the movie Dr. Flyte does all of this, only he has the microbe available inside the mobile lab already.
7. What was the name of the chemical agent used to fight off the ancient enemy?

Answer: Biosan 4

The microbe was first created in 1972 by cell fusion. General Electric Corporation set Dr. Ananda Chakrabarty on the task of patenting a man made bacterium. They wanted a "bug" that could effectively digest the carbon compounds of crude oil. This would enable a fast and effective oil spill clean up. Chakrabarty did find the microbe to do this, but it was very weak.

After acquiring the patent for this microbe, the GE scientists worked on the successful creation of Biosan 4. Biosan could withstand deterioration for 12-18 hours. Though liberties were taken with his work for this novel, you can read more on Ananda at http://www.uic.edu/depts/mcmi/faculty/chakrabarty.html .
8. Which of these initial survivors died last?

Answer: Dr. Flyte

They all witnessed the creature and survived, but did not all make it in the end. Gordy was killed by the faux Airedale, then Dr. Sara by a tentacled version of the creature. Dr. Flyte fell down into the pit created by the massive creature, broken but alive.

Then it came for him in the form of a massive spider. Tal tried to save Flyte by spraying down the Biosan, but the creature had just enough life in it to bite his face off.
9. Who was the nurse that captured Tal Whitman's heart while he was in the hospital?

Answer: Paula Thorne

It was six weeks after the events in Snowfield that Bryce, Jenny, and Lisa attended Tal and Paula's Halloween party in Santa Mira. Tal was in a chicken costume, Lisa was a witch, Bryce a cowboy and Jenny a cowgirl.
10. Out of all the people to directly encounter the ancient enemy, only 4 lived through it.

Answer: True

Bryce Hammond, Tal Whitman, Kale Fletcher, Gene Terr, and Jenny and Lisa Paige all lived through their initial experiences. As the creature was dying off, it appointed Gene and Kale as its Apostles. Functioning as such, Gene and Kale arrive at the hospital to murder the rest of the group. Tal killed Gene and Bryce killed Kale inside the hospital. Thankfully, Kale was disoriented from a tick bite several days earlier and missed a fatal shot to Bryce.

The book ends almost a year later, in Hawaii, with Bryce and Jenny on their honeymoon.
