Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is a main protagonist of the Gold and Silver chapters?

Answer: Crys

The Gold and Silver manga has three main protagonists: Gold, Silver, and Crys. Crys is short for Crystal, which as you can probably guess is the name of the game that came out at the same time as the Gold and Silver Versions. All the Pokemon game versions are named after the main protagonists of that chapter.

The manga also somewhat follows the story line of the games, not entirely, but any Pokemon gamer who reads the manga will see its connection to the games.
2. As of the end of Platinum, how many pokedex holders are there?

Answer: 13

As of the end of Platinum, there are 13 pokedex holders: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, and Platina. Every generation usually has three pokedex holders with the exception of Yellow.
3. At what level did Crystal's Chikorita evolve?

Answer: 9

Pokemon in the manga usually evolve at the same level as in the games, but there are certain factors not present in the games which can lead to a Pokemon evolving before the specified level. If you read the manga there are a lot of evolutions that take place (since all the main protagonists in the manga actually make their Pokemon evolve.)
4. At what level does Crystal's Bayleaf evolve to Meganium?

Answer: 9

Surprised? I was surprised too when I read the chapter for the first time. Gold took Cyndaquill and Silver stole Totodile leaving Chikorita with the professor. Both Cyndaquill and Totodile evolved before Chikorita was taken in by Crystal. Immediately after Chikorita evolved into Bayleaf, the three protagonists meet and suddenly fell into trouble.

In order to save their trainers, the three Pokemon evolved at the same time to protect them, A TRIPLE EVOLUTION! It was later explained that the three starters of any generation are connected in a way and a phenomenon known as "Evolution Pressure" forces them to evolve if the other starters of the same generation evolve near them.
5. Gyarados can fly in the manga.

Answer: True

A long debated question - why is Gyarados part flying? Can Gyarados really fly? I will explain this through the anime, manga, and game.

*In the anime: Gyarados cannot fly in the anime, it is considered to be only a water type. A Gyarados can't even fight well on land nor have I seen one properly do in the anime.
*In the game: Even in the first generation games, Gyarados was already a water/flying type. It has immunity to ground attacks and has always had its x4 weakness to electric.
*In the manga: As of Platinum, five main characters had a Gyarados, namely Red, Blue, Silver, Lance, and Cyrus(Team Galactic Leader). I will tell you right now, when i read up to Emerald, I did not see a flying Gyarados, Red's Gyarados is seen fully capable of fighting on land with no issues but doesn't show itself levitating. When the protagonists fly to different cities, they choose their other pokemon; Red uses Aerodactyl, Green uses Charizard, and Silver uses Honchcrow. When I finally read the D/P/Pt manga, it finally showed what everyone wanted to see, A FLYING GYARADOS! Cyrus actually instructed his Gyarados to FLY him to the top of Mt. Coronet, and it was gonna do it until Cynthia stopped him from doing so. Then in battle Cyrus instructed his Gyarados to do dragon dance, and there you will see, Gyarados FLIES out of the building into the sun and performs a dragon dance in mid air. So far this is the only scene where Gyarados actually flies.

The manga was based off the games so I guess they really wanted Gyarados to be part flying.

There is a rumor that states Gyarados was originally going to be Water/Dragon but they didn't allow it because it would have been severely overpowered, also because of the fact there were no dragon moves at the time other than dragon rage which is a flat 40 damage, it literally would have had no weaknesses.
6. Which of these moves does Red's Pikachu not use?

Answer: Fake out

This is where you see how special Red's Pika (nickname) truly is. Pika does the impossible and learns moves that no other Pikachu can. You can get the HM surf or rage, and try to teach it to a Pikachu and utterly fail. Not only that, it learned a move that does not even exist in the anime or game. Mega Volt's power is ten times the power of thunderbolt, so if it was a move present in game, it would have had a base power of 950! Have a choice scarf on and laugh at those legendaries who fall before the mighty Pika!
7. Who is Silver's father?

Answer: Giovanni

Do you remember your rival in Gold and Silver games, the red haired kid looking through the window, the one who steals one of the starters? The one you will give a funny name to make fun of him? That's Giovanni's kid; in FireRed/LeafGreen chapters you will see another side of Giovanni as he sacrifices himself to save his son from the fire of his burning aircraft.

He doesn't care about himself, all he cares about is his son and ensures no harm comes to him. It doesn't matter that Giovanni's whole body gets burned, as long as his son is safe from harm.

This really changed my view on him.
8. Who helped Mewtwo escape after being created by Team Rocket?

Answer: Blaine

In the movies, Mewtwo is used by Team Rocket to capture Pokemon, Mewtwo then escapes and plans to destroy everything and make a world of clones. Then ultimately becomes a good guy.

Not in the manga; there Mewtwo is a full time good guy and was never used for evil. He was indeed created by Team Rocket but Blaine, the scientist who was involved with the creation of Mewtwo, helped him escape before Team Rocket could even use him. Mewtwo was surprisingly loyal to Blaine, allowing him to be his trainer and helping him foil Team Rockets Plans. Mewtwo also opened up to Red, who also temporarily managed to become Mewtwo's trainer for an epic Mewtwo-Deoxys Showdown! So next time you see Blaine in his gym at Cinnebar island, keep in mind how he saved Mewtwo and the Pokemon world.
9. The pokedex states that Dragonites on average are more than seven feet tall. Lance's Dragonite is more than double that size.

Answer: True

More than double? More than triple sounds about right. Here is an idea on how big his Dragonite is - picture a regular Dragonite and standing on its hand is an action figure. That's Huge! Dragonite is currently the biggest Pokemon I have seen in the manga with the exception of Groudon and Kyogre (they may even be smaller). Keep in mind Lance is a young adult, which would make him six feet at least and here we see him carried on the palm of his Dragonite. All other Dragonites I have seen so far are regular sized and when stacked to Lance's, it almost seems like a joke. Even his Dragonairs are giants, he can stand on his Dragonair's head and be surfed around.
10. When Lance was in Vermilion City, he ordered his Dragonair to shoot a Hyper Beam at the city. What happened to the city?

Answer: The whole city was destroyed

One Hyper Beam. That's all it took to destroy an entire city and it was not even a Dragonite. Lance also showed his ability when he went up against Mewtwo who failed to even faint just one of his Pokemon. Lance's Dragonite has a unique ability of redirecting its Hyper Beam and withstanding molten lava. Regular attacks seem to be ineffective against it.
11. Deoxys' form change is caused by what?

Answer: The climate of the regions

The Kanto-Johto region's climate allows Deoxys to freely change into two of its four forms, the other two are from the Hoen-Sinnoh regions.
12. Some humans have abilities in the manga. Which of these characters is not one of them?

Answer: Lorelei

Morty can locate hidden items with his ability, Sabrina has psychic powers, and Lance is capable of healing and communicating with Pokemon. Lorelei's ice cuffs are made by one of her Pokemon, so she doesn't have any ability.
13. Which Gym leader did Raikou choose to be his trainer?

Answer: Lt. Surge

Raikou chose Surge, even though he is a member of Team Rocket. Together with Misty and Blain who got the other two, they tried to defeat Pryce, who was able to take control of both Ho-oh and Lugia.
14. Which pokedex holder in the list obtained all eight badges the fastest?

Answer: Platina

Sapphire had finished getting all eight badges in 80 days, and shortly held the record until Platina broke it.

"Not sure if weakling gym leaders, or freaking gifted trainer."

It took Platina 25 days to obtain six badges from horribly disappointing gym leaders. The fact that she, a complete newbie who just got a starter and had no knowledge of battling to begin with, was able to smash the record like it was nothing.
15. In the first two generations, Professor Oak chooses the trainers who get pokedexes depending on his perception of them. What is silver in this?

Answer: Exchanger

Red-Fighter/Green-Trainer/Blue-Evolver/Yellow-Healer/Gold-Breeder/Silver-Exchanger/Crystal-Catcher

Professor Oak gave them pokedexes (or at least allowed them to) because he saw this in them.
