Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name was given to the police raid on a "house of ill-repute" in the Rebus novel 'Strip Jack'?

Answer: Operation Creeper

Rebus has not been looking forward to an operation aimed at a brothel in a posh area of Edinburgh and carried out with members of the Press looking on. The clients of what Rebus called an "Establishment establishment" were mainly-well-to-do businessmen.
2. In the Rebus mystery 'Strip Jack', what was the name of a Member of Parliament discovered on the premises during a police raid on a brothel?

Answer: Gregor Jack

Jack was a popular independent MP who worked hard for his constituents. Rebus admired his work; both had similar early backgrounds in Fife. Jack's wife was part of a glitzy set of people who had met at university and kept in touch afterwards.
3. Detective Inspector John Rebus was a lover of 'classic' rock and jazz music. In 'Strip Jack', upon listening to music being played he remarked "If I can't get the Rolling Stones, I'll always settle for second best". To which band was he referring?

Answer: The Beatles

'Sgt Pepper' was on the turntable when Rebus went to dinner at a colleague's home. Note to Beatles fans: Don't take any sense of outrage out on me - it was Ian Rankin who wrote the line. The Beatles vs. Stones argument has been raging for years and I have no opinion either way.
4. In the Rebus mystery 'Strip Jack', what was the name of the disgraced MP's wife?

Answer: Liz

After the story of the MP's visit to the brothel broke in the newspapers, Rebus went to see him, and was told that his wife was probably at their Highland retreat. She seemed to move in slightly more cultured circles than her husband and had different friends.
5. An actor played a key role in the Rebus mystery 'Strip Jack'. What kind of movie role had Rab Kinnoul found fame playing?

Answer: An assassin

A low-budget British thriller had set Kinnoul on the road to fame and he had gone through a Hollywood phase before returning to Scotland. Kinnoul's home was filled with pictures of him and famous actors.
6. In 'Strip Jack', John Rebus had a run-in with an animal that left its mark on him. What kind of animal was it?

Answer: A cat

'Rasputin' was on guard when Rebus called at a bookshop seeking evidence of the crime he had been investigating, the theft of some near-priceless books. Rebus was not good with animals, even those that liked him.
7. The disgraced MP provided an alibi for another of the lead characters in 'Strip Jack'. What was that alibi?

Answer: A weekly round of golf

The round was a regular booking at a local golf club but was seldom played because the bookseller was playing a different type of game...with the actor's wife. The MP was content to offer the alibi.
8. In 'Strip Jack', while trying to locate the MP's wife at their Highland retreat, Rebus stayed at nearby bed and breakfast accommodation. What was the name of the landlady?

Answer: Mrs Wilkie

Mrs Wilkie was clearly disturbed, if not mentally deranged. Rebus put a chair to his door to ensure she did not wander into his room at night looking for her long-dead husband.
9. As 'Strip Jack' developed, we learnt of the reason for the MP's visit to the brothel. What was it?

Answer: His sister was one of the girls

The MP had received a message that his sister was back from London and working at the brothel. He went to visit her, but she wanted nothing to do with him.
10. Where, in 'Strip Jack', did the final encounter between John Rebus and a murderer he had been hunting take place?

Answer: At the MP's Highland retreat

Rebus barely escaped with his life after the killer set the Highland retreat on fire and then fled. Rebus rescued a hostage the killer had been holding, and than ran in pursuit. The killer was not arrested, but if you want to find out who the killer was and what happened, you'll have to buy the book.
