1. The first murder is a strangulation. Who is the victim?

Answer: Carol Garner

Carol Garner has been stalked by the murderer to her home, where she is killed. Charlie is her three year old son, who witnessed the murder. Tom Thorne is the protagonist in this series, and Sarah McEvoy is a detective working with him on the case.
2. The story flashes back 19 years to a school, where a student is being bullied. Who is this student?

Answer: Martin Palmer

Martin Palmer is held down while Bardsley plays the 'Jungle Game', which consists of hitting him harder and harder in the chest. Nicklin comes to his rescue. Karen is a friend of Palmer's.
3. Thorne develops a theory that two killers are working in tandem. A previous double murder involved which victim(s)?

Answer: Jane Lovell

The second victim was Katie Choi, killed some distance away at around the same time. Lyn Gibson was a friend of Jane Lovell.
4. A couple is found murdered in a hotel room. Their nationality is:-

Answer: Dutch

The couple have been sliced up while alive, then battered to death. This later turns out to be a totally unrelated case.

Palmer is unable to shoot his next victim, and runs away when she attacks him. Nicklin (not using that name now) carries out his part. Thorne persuades his superiors to let Palmer go, hoping to draw 'Nicklin' out.

Answer: He is male

Thorne had interviewed the boys' old Maths teacher, Ken Bowles. 'Nicklin' was aware that Palmer was under police control, but still sent an e-mail, giving him instructions for the next murder.
7. Karen McMahon had disappeared when she was 14. What happened to her?

Answer: She was murdered.

Karen, Palmer and 'Nicklin' hung around together as teenagers. 'Nicklin' told the police he saw her getting into a blue car. Thorne's team found her body buried at the site the three used to hang out.
8. Holland has a brief affair with DS McEvoy. Why does it stop?

Answer: He discovers her drug habit

MvEvoy has a serious cocaine habit which she pursues at work. Holland tries to help her stop.
9. Sarah McEvoy is contacted by the killer, and agrees to meet him, hoping to redeem herself. Whom does she meet?

Answer: Cookson

Andrew Cookson, a teacher at the school, is Nicklin. He had killed Bowles because he finally recognized him. Norman is a press liaison officer with the police.
10. What happens to McEvoy at the end?

Answer: She is killed

She meets Cookson and he takes her hostage. Thorne arrives but can do nothing. Palmer arrives and shoots McEvoy (she dies). He is shot dead by police (his wish). Cookson is captured (having had his mouth smashed by Thorne). End of story.
