Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said "I have of late, of wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth ..."?

Answer: Hamlet

Hamlet talking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, also in the film "Withnail and I".
2. Who will meet again "When the hurlyburly's done, when the battle's lost and won"?

Answer: The Witches

Come on... had to be, didn't it. Oh, supposedly the Witches in Macbeth were based on genuine black magic rituals and things. Creepy.
3. Who was Shylock?

Answer: A rich Jewish moneylender

Who was "The Merchant of Venice"? Some have argued that while Antonio is the merchant with the ships, Shylock is the merchant with the money and therefore may also be considered "The Merchant of Venice". However, in his "Dramatis Personae", Shakespeare describes Shylock as "a rich Jew" and Antonio as "a merchant of Venice".
4. Who said "I can smile, and murder while I smile"?

Answer: Richard, Duke of Gloucester

This is in Henry VI part 3. Fantastic line.
5. Where was Richard III when he called "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!"?

Answer: Bosworth Field

Poor old blighter was the last English king to die in battle on the field. The Battle of Bosworth Field, in the English War of the Roses, was between King Richard III (York) and Henry Tudor (Lancaster), who became the future Henry VII.
6. In which play was the character of Dromio?

Answer: The Comedy of Errors

Two Dromios. Two Antonios. Twelfth night twins, and a bunch of others. I think Shakey might have been, shall we say, fixated?
7. Who said "Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes and groves and ye that in the sands with printless foot do chase the ebbing neptune and do fly him when he comes back. Ye demi puppets ...".

Answer: Prospero

Prospero is actually casting a spell at this point. The scene is awe inspiring. The Tempest, scene V.
8. Which line follows "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day ..."?

Answer: Thou art more lovely and more temperate

Got it wrong? Read it. Got it right? Read it again anyway. Very, very good. Sonnet 18.
9. Shakespeare died on St George's day. This is April ...

Answer: 23rd

Born AND died on St George's Day. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. According to the parish register of the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare was baptized there on April 26, 1564. It is generally thought that he was born on April 23rd since it was customary for babies to be baptised on the third day. But there is no proof of his actual date of birth.
10. "Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York." Who was "this son of York"?

Answer: Edward IV

Edward IV's father was Richard Duke of York, hence, "this son of York". Interestingly enough, when Richard died in his bid to become King of England, he was beheaded in a field, wearing a paper crown, and his enemies laughing in his face. Golly, and you thought that losing at Nintendo was harsh. Oh, that happened in Henry VI part 2 I do believe.

The speech is from Richard III act 1 scene 1.
