Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kabuo Miyamoto is on trial for the first-degree murder of whom?

Answer: Carl Heine Jr.

More specifically, Kabuo is on trial for faking an emergency, gaining passage onto Carl Jr.'s fishing boat at night, and clubbing him over the edge of his boat and into the fishing net with a fishing gaff.
2. Who is the lawyer selected by the state to defend Kabuo?

Answer: Nels Gudmondson

Lew Fielding was the judge and Alvin Hooks was the prosecutor. Eric Bledsoe was one of Ishmael's war friends who was killed by a "Jap" (a slang term used in the book for a Japanese American).
3. Ishmael lost his left arm in Japan during World War II.

Answer: True

Ishmael lost his left arm during World War II. It steeled his veins to have been so affected during the war that when he returned he was a broken shell of a man, scarred forever with the horror of war.
4. Who was the courtroom bailiff?

Answer: Ed Soames

Ed Soames is a typical, hardworking, white collar worker. For this reason he doesn't really have much to contribute to the story, and as such we don't see him too much.
5. What was the name of the island on which "Snow Falling on Cedars" is set?

Answer: San Piedro

San Piedro is located on the southern part of the Straight of Juan de Fuca in the Puget Sound, WA. San Piedro, however, does not exist. The one fact I remember most about it is that it was greatly undersized by Guterson, probably unintentionally. Based on the map provided at the beginning of the book, I would estimate that San Piedro is about half a mile long and a fifth of a mile wide, not nearly enough to acommodate all the happenings in this book.
6. Hatsue met Ishmael at Camp Manzanar.

Answer: False

Hatsue was Ishmael's secret love during high school. That is to say, secret from everybody else, as it was not acceptable for a white boy to be seeing a Japanese girl at the time. When Hatsue was forcefully transported to Camp Manzanar, there she met her future husband, Kabuo Miyamoto.
7. What did Kabuo claim he was owed by Etta Heine?

Answer: Seven acres of hilly land

The dispute over the seven acres of land is key to the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto. The Miyamoto family, born in Japan, had agreed to purchase seven acres of hilly raspberry farm from Carl Heine Sr. by a series of payments over several years. However, Carl Sr. died before the last of these payments could be facilitated, and his wife, Etta, who was somewhat racist, broke off the agreement, claiming that the Miyamotos had missed their last payment after they were sent to Camp Manzanar because of the internal hostilities against Japanese-Americans during World War II.

She then sold the land to Ole Jurgenson, and when Kabuo returned he was never able to regain the land.
8. Which of the following characters did not serve in World War II?

Answer: Nels Gudmondson

Although Ishmael, Carl Jr., and Kabuo all served in the war, the war clearly affected Ishmael the most. Physically, he lost his right arm, but more importantly, he was shaken and mentally paralyzed for the remainder of his life.
9. In which town is the Courthouse located?

Answer: Amity Harbor

Amity Harbor is the only town on the small island of San Piedro. After all, San Piedro has only around 5,000 inhabitants.
10. What evidence does Ishmael Chambers uncover near the end of the book?

Answer: Another ship was in the area at the time of Carl's death

The two lighthouse workers had just left the island on the same night which Carl died, and their boat was scheduled to have been around the area in which Carl was fishing at around the same time as Carl's watch stopped.
