Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Something is rotten...' Can you complete the quote from which Jasper Fforde took his title?

Answer: in the state of Denmark

"Hamlet", of course. Though, if you've read the book, you'll realise that the question of authorship is not straightforward. Which of the cloned Shgakespeafes penned these words??? Denmark is the source of much of the conflict in the book, resolved by the Queen of Denmark's performance at George Formby's state funeral.
2. With whom does Hamlet become romantically involved?

Answer: Lady Emma Hamilton

Emma Hamilton and Hamlet are both staying with Thursday's mum. At least now she's not having to worry about Emma Hamilton and her husband...
3. What are the names of Thursday's son and Pickwick's son?

Answer: Friday Parke-Laine and Alan

Friday's father is Landen Parke-Laine, who was eradicated in "Lost in a Good Book", leaving behind no trace of his existence other than Friday. Landen's parents were Houson and Bildon, but Thursday resisted the temptation to call her son Hotelon. Neither Thursday nor Pickwick seem able to control the delinquent dodo, Alan.
4. Which 13th century saint made the Revealment that there would be a home win for Swindon in 1988?

Answer: St. Zvlkx

The victory turns out to be more important than you might imagine, bringing the downfall of the tyrant Goliath whose latest money-spinner and power trip is to rebrand themselves as a religion. 'Small events have large consequences', remember!
5. Which of the following is NOT characteristic of Neanderthals?

Answer: They are vegetarian

In fact, their favourite foods include rabbit and beetles. They don't like to travel, are never in a hurry and can't bear waste. Their greatest source of anger is that they were DNA sequenced by Goliath in such a way that the males are all infertile. Don't try lying to them - they sense all human emotion and aren't afraid to comment on it.

It's true that Stiggins does lie once to save Thursday, but this is certainly not characteristic!
6. Where does President George Formby experience his brush with death?

Answer: Dauntsey Services

Formby was rescued by Spike and Thursday before he could be taken 'northside'. He believes it was some kind of motorway services theme park. Leigh Delamere, you will remember, was named for the mother of one of Acheron Hades' sidekicks in "The Eyre Affair".
7. How was Spike's wife better known?

Answer: The Windowmaker

There was a mix-up with the printing...
Cindy was put into coma by an accident with a falling piano stool intended for Thursday. Poor Spike thought she was just a librarian. It's always the quiet ones.
8. Which of these is a real person?

Answer: Daphne Farquitt

Norman Johnson was the Minotaur, of course. Yorrick Kaine had lived in the Outlands for years but Thursday discovered that he was actually fictional.
9. At which battle does Thursday help her father to determine the course of history?

Answer: Trafalgar

Victory on the Victory! Thursday and Corporal Next aren't the only time-travellers there - a documentary film crew from the twenty-second century are ahead of them. That's one I'm setting the video for.
10. Who do the Swindon Mallets take on in the final of the WCL Superhoop '88?

Answer: Reading Whackers

Croquet, as played in Thursday's universe, is a fast, attacking game requiring the presence of legal services to determine offside disputes. Almost as malicious as real croquet, then.
