Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with an easy one..."Three Rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky..."

Answer: Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone

"Three Rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky/ Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone/ Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die/ One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne/ In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie/ One Ring to rule them all...."and so on. This poem is found at the beginning of LOTR.
2. "In the black wind the stars shall die and still on _____ here let them lie"

Answer: gold

Sung by the Barrow-wight when the four hobbits are on the Barrow-downs in the Barrow. Tom Bombadil rescues them....what a great guy.
3. "Renewed shall be blade that was broken.."

Answer: The crownless again shall be king

This song is about Aragorn. The 'blade that was broken' is Narsil, later reforged into Anduril. And the 'crownless' is obviously Aragorn.
4. "Snow-white! Snow-white! O lady clear!"

Answer: O Queen beyond the Western Seas!

Elbereth/Gilthoniel was another name for Varda, spouse of Manwe. Varda was revered among the Elves as she created the stars, which were the first sight the Elves beheld when they awoke at Cuivienen in the First Age. This song is sung by the Elves seen by Frodo and Sam on their journey to Crickhollow, led by Gildor Inglorion.
5. Another easy one...."Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and _____ _____"

Answer: caverns old

This is sung by Thorin and Co in 'The Hobbit', when at Bilbo's house...it's all about the Dwarves of Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, and how Smaug the dragon took over- they are desperate to get their wealth back- greedy dwarves!
6. "The Worm of Dread is slain and dead..."

Answer: And ever so our foes shall fall!

This is sung by the Dwarves after Smaug is shot down by Bard. If only they knew the controversy that incident would cause.
7. "For east or west all woods must fail..." Do we ever find out the next line of this song?

Answer: No

This song is sung by Frodo when in the Old Forest. It is sung to try and lighten their spirits, but the trees are so oppressive that the hobbit trails off, leaving the song unfinished.
8. "Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow..."

Answer: Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow

Tom is such an interesting character, it's a shame he was left out of the film. Tom sings this in the Old Forest.
9. "Lost and forgotten be, darker than the darkness..."

Answer: Where gates stand forever shut, till the world is mended

Sung by Tom Bombadil when rescuing the hobbits from the Barrow-wight.
10. "Gil-galad was an Elven-king Of him the harpers _____ _____"

Answer: sadly sing

Gil-galad was son of Fingon, and led the Last Alliance along with Elendil; they were both slain on Orodruin when battling Sauron.
11. "ASH NAZG DURBATULUK..."

Answer: ASH NAZG GIMBATUL

This is in the Black Speech of Mordor and translates to 'One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them'. It is written on the Ring, but is only visible when the Ring is very hot.
12. "Seek for the sword that was broken..."

Answer: In Imladris it dwells

Imladris is, of course, Rivendell, meaning 'Deep Dale of the Cleft'..or something along those lines. And the 'sword that was broken' is the aforementioned Narsil, later reforged into Anduril. Narsil was broken when Elendil fought Sauron. This poem is the one heard by Boromir in his dream that prompted him to journey to Rivendell, seeking the meaning of the words.
13. "Annon edhellen, edro hi ammen..."

Answer: Fennas nogothrim, lasto beth lammen!

Gandalf says this when trying to open the gate of Moria. In the film the second line is left out, but I bought the extended version and it is included in that, which was nice. I don't know the translation, but 'annon edhellen' means gate of the Elves, and 'lasto beth lammen' means 'hear my voice'. The other three phrases were made up and don't mean anything.
14. "Gondor! Gondor, between the Mountains and the..."

Answer: Sea

This poem is great- 'O proud walls! White towers! O winged crown and throne of gold!'
15. "O Orofarne,..."

Answer: Lassemista, Carnimirie!

Sung by an Ent...I forget which. Possibly Treebeard or Quickbeam.
16. "Beneath the stars of Ever-eve in Eldamar it shone, In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven _____"

Answer: Tirion

This song is about the sadness of the Elves at the 'fading' of Lothlorien, and the fact that they will soon depart over the sea from Mithlond, the Grey Havens.
17. "Where now are the Dunedain, Elessar, Elessar?"....Who are the Dunedain?

Answer: Numenoreans

Dun- meaning West, -edain being the plural of man ie men. Singular Dunadan. The Dunedain are the men of the West, from Numenor (although that land was destroyed and the Dunedain have to live their lives as Rangers).
18. "Galadriel! Galadriel!..."

Answer: Clear is the water of your well

Galadriel's well is, of course, her Mirror that Frodo and Sam look into.
19. "Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!..."

Answer: Forth Eorlingas!

I love this one- it really gives an impression of the courage and loyalty of the Rohirrim.
20. "From the North shall he come, need shall drive him: he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the _____"

Answer: Dead

This one is about how Aragorn will summon the Oathbreakers at the Stone of Erech. And it's a good thing he does, or the whole War of the Rinf might have had a different outcome.
21. "Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!..." What is the last word of this poem?

Answer: Gondor

This may have fooled a few people- this poem is not to be confused with the one that begins 'Arise now, arise, Riders of Theoden'. The last word of that poem is 'Eorlingas'.
22. "Under Men's dominion Middle-earth shall seek.."

Answer: until Dagor Dagorath and the Doom cometh

Dagor Dagorath translates to 'Battle of Battles'- what a great name! This line is from a poem found in 'The Silmarillion'.
23. "Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar..."

Answer: Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!

Valimar is the capital of Valinor, home of the Valar in Aman. 'Namarie' is simply farewell in Elvish...not sure whether Sindarin or Quenya. The other one is what Gilraen (Aragorn's mother) says about Aragorn. It means 'I gave Hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself'. Estel, of course, is the name Aragorn was known by in his youth, meaning Hope.
24. "No tidings Elven-folk have heard..."

Answer: Of Amroth evermore

This song is about the love of Amroth and Nimrodel. They were going to leave Middle-earth together, but Nimrodel was lost on the way to the Havens. Amroth wanted the ship to wait but a storm caused it to be swept away. Amroth dived off and swam towards the shore, but no-one knows what became of him.
25. Last one! I'll give it to you for free... "Cormacolindor, a laita tarienna!"

Answer: Praise them! The Ring-bearers, praise them with great praise!

:) I couldn't resist. What a fitting way to end the quiz- 'Praise them! The Ring-bearers, praise them with great praise!'
