Before tributes leave for the games, there is a a time for goodbyes. Katniss is surprised when Madge, the mayor's daughter who she does not have a close relationship with, comes to say goodbye to her. In this time, Madge gives Katniss the mockingjay pin. Katniss finds it in a store in the movie, but not the book.

For her private session, Katniss plans to shoot the targets with a bow and arrows a few times and be done. However, because she does not practice archery during training, she does not realize that the bows are different from hers at home. Once she is in the arena Katniss first faces the problem of finding water. She knows she is close when Haymitch does not send any. She has no trouble deciding to sleep strapped into a tree and only has run ins with Careers later in the book.

Glimmer, the girl from District One, dies when Katniss cuts a tracker jacker nest out of a tree and it lands where the Careers are sleeping. She and the girl from Four receive enough stings that the venom could kill them - and it does. Katniss then takes Glimmer's bow and arrows.

Katniss realizes that if she destroys the Careers' supplies they will have nothing stored to eat and have to hunt for themselves, making it harder for them to survive. She and her new ally, Rue, devise a plan in which Rue lights three fires to distract the Careers and draw them away from their camp, then Katniss finds a way to destroy their supplies.

When Foxface walks towards the supplies in a special pattern Katniss sees that the Careers have figured out how to reactivate the landmines that are active in the one minute before the Games start.

She shoots open a bag of apples and an apple activates the mines that blow up the supplies.

After Rue dies an announcement is made that two tributes can win if they are from the same district. Katniss then goes looking for Peeta and finds him camouflaged in mud next to a stream. She cleans him up, finding that he is seriously ill, and finds a cave for them to hide in.

Nightlock is a poisonous berry that Peeta picks thinking it is edible. He leaves it with the rest of their gathering of food and Foxface takes and eats some, not knowing that they are poisonous either.

Cato is the last tribute to die. He is tortured by mutts until Katniss and Peeta realize the mutts will not finish him. Katniss shoots him in the head and a cannon fires, signaling his death.

Answer: The crown is split in half

As Katniss and Peeta are being awarded the crown Katniss wonders why there is only one crown. Caesar Flickerman then breaks the crown in half and places half on each of their heads. Question answered.
