At the beginning of the story Charles Milverton visits Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. This was upon the invitation of Mr Sherlock Holmes himself.

Mr Sherlock Holmes for the first time turns against the law saying that it is his opportunity to test his skills. Dr Watson and Mr Sherlock Holmes cut masks out of black silk to cover their faces.

At the noise of the gun shots such an alarm went off that by the time Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes got into the garden they were perused by the under-gardener. Holmes was very active on the occasion and ran swiftly to the garden gate and jumped over the 6-foot wall. Dr Watson had a bit of trouble though and the under-gardener not only saw some of his features but also was able to catch his foot while he was jumping over the wall.
