Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Rite of Blood" by Elaine Cunningham: What was the name of the Drow House that was famous for its wizardly prowess? Liriel Baenre, the daughter of archmage Gromph Baenre, was even given to this house to be trained in the art.

Answer: Shobalar

House Do'Urden was Drizz't's house. The house would be annihilated after its failure to recapture the renegade. Xandra was the name of the Shobalar wizard who took care of Liriel. Thay was the town of Red Wizards where Mulander, the prey of Liriel, was from.
2. "Elminster at the Magefair" by Ed Greenwood: How did Duara secretly pass the key to Elminster despite some spies watching them?

Answer: She kissed him

Duara had been dealing with a whole bunch of admirers, some of which happened to be spies, and Elminster came up to her, exclaimed, and kissed her passionately. The key would end up in his mouth and he would take it out after they were far away from the magefair.
3. "Darksword" by Troy Denning: How many darkswords did Melegaunt create for the Vaasans?

Answer: 20

He created twenty swords for the Vaasans. The swords would possess the wielders. Only the chief hadn't taken an enchanted sword to fight the enemy; but when he saw that his wife was dead, he threw all caution to the wind and grabbed the last remaining sword.
4. "Blood Sport" by Christie Golden: What quality does Jander posess that other vampires do not? This surprises the Shark quite a bit.

Answer: He can be awake during the day

The shark comes to the vampire's house to try to kill him while he is asleep. Just as she is about to kill him, Jander springs up and opposes her.
5. "Six of Swords" by William W. Connors: Kesmarex, the battle axe of the dead Shandt, is killing the remaining members of the Six of Swords. What does "Kesmarex" mean?

Answer: Vengeance of the King

Orlando and Lelanda are the only ones who survive and that is only because Orlando was able to prove that he was a friend of Shandt by showing the axe his medallion.
6. "The Rose Window" by Monte Cook: In the beginning of the story, the writer says that...

Answer: he hopes nobody will read this

The story itself is an account of all the events leading up to Jaon's attempt to purge his temple of the Rose Window's evil. If he succeeds, he will destroy the account. Therefore, he hopes no one will read it.
7. "The First Moonwell" by Douglas Niles: What creature did the goddess use to do her bidding?

Answer: Leviathan

The Leviathan helped create the moonwell for the goddess so that she could see.
8. "The Greatest Hero Who Ever Died" by J. Robert King: Who killed "the greatest hero who ever lived?"

Answer: Horace

Horace, the barkeeper, was the only one who hadn't been enchanted by Paramore's story. He knew that the man was evil even though the knight had portrayed himself as the most righteous hero ever.
9. "Tertius and the Artifact" by Jeff Grubb: What was the artifact that the thief Raven had stolen, and Tertius was to retrieve, called?

Answer: Tripartite Orb

The Tripartite Orb was supposedly used to prevent all surrounding magic and was considered a device of great power. Tertius' uncle sent him to get the stolen orb. The stolen object ended up being a replica and not the real thing anyway.
10. "Red Ambition" by Jean Rabe: Who is the Goddess of Lies from whose temple Szass Tam attempts to steal a crown?

Answer: Leira

Szass Tam scorns Leira and tries to steal the artifact from her temple. However, in the end he gets tricked (how fitting, since the goddess of lies is the one to play him). Tam is not hurt but disappointed in a way.
11. "The Common Spell" by Kate Novak-Grubb: After playing what game did Marl, the cooper's son, realize that his teacher Kith Lias and the wizard Kasilith were the same person?

Answer: Anagrams

Kith Lias had told the little children a story about Kasilith about why it was very important to be literate. Marl was stubborn but understood the point. Later he would realize that it was actually Kasilith telling him the story about herself.
12. "Assassin's Shadow" by Jess Lebow: Why does the Archwizard Shadow decide not to kill Cy?

Answer: Cy is entirely too young to be an assassin

Lume takes advantage of Cy's lack of knowledge and sends him on a quest to assassinate the Archwizard. However, Cy fails but manages to get out of there alive. Lume then decides to use Cy's knowledge of the wizard's power to form a bigger attack. Despite a severe struggle, the wizard manages to save himself and kill everyone else except Cy.

He then tells Cy that he is too young to be an assassin and that he should find a new line of work. Cy gladly leaves.
13. "And a Dark Tide Rises" by Keith Francis Strohm: The wizard Dharvim Starson says, "Those who wish to appear learned call it a sahuagin. Those who truly understand it, simply call it..."

Answer: death

The beasts have risen from the depths of the sea and are threatening to overrun the world.
14. "Empty Joys" by R.A. Salvatore: What was the name of the baker that Jarlaxle had conveniently acquired for the highwaymen's camp?

Answer: Piter

The ever-opportunistic Jarlaxle decides to employ the baker whose caravan the band had raided.
15. Finally, since there are only 14 stories, here's a question about the authors: Who wrote the first ever "Forgotten Realms" novel?

Answer: Douglas Niles

In the short biography of Douglas Niles it states that he "had the privilege of writing the first "Forgotten Realms" novel: "Darkwalker on Moonshae."
