1. King Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves' first meeting starts their relationship off to a very bad start. What happened during this meeting?

Answer: Henry dressed up in disguise and kissed Anne.

Anne has never seen Henry before. When an old man bursts into her room and kisses her, she has no idea that it is her bridegroom. She pushes him away in obvious repulsion and spits out the taste of him. It is believed that this is what dooms their marriage. Jane Boleyn believes that at this moment, Henry saw himself for what he really was.

2. Which of King Henry's advisor's is held responsible for Henry's ill fated marriage to Anne of Cleves?

Answer: Thomas Cromwell

The Cleves marriage was considered to be a triumph for Thomas Cromwell. He arranged the alliance with Cleves so that England would have an ally against France and Spain. When Henry decides that he does not like Anne, it proves to be Cromwell's downfall. He is later executed.
3. What is Katherine Howard's reasoning for why the vows that she exchanged with Francis Dereham can't be real?

Answer: She didn't have a proper gown.

Katherine and Francis exchange their vows after church one day at her grandmother's house. There were no witness' and no priest. However, Katherine states in several places in the book that she doesn't think the vows were binding because she wasn't wearing a proper gown.

She thought they were daydreaming. She felt that later, when she had a proper gown, they would get married for real. Until of course she is ready to marry Henry, in which case she dismisses it is as daydreams and child's play.

Mary tells Anne that Henry has never told any of his wives goodbye. Even Jane Seymour who died giving him a son. Mary said that Henry was hard hearted but not hard faced. He can't bear to see a woman cry. As the tension mounts with Anne and her situation she becomes fixated on the fact that she will never have warning when Henry is ready to be rid of her.

Katherine isn't very fond of Henry's nickname for her because she believes it is a name a man would give his daughter. She doesn't think of it as a lover's nickname at all.

Katherine was not pleased that Cromwell was executed on her wedding day. Not only does she feel it is a very poor gift for a bride, but she is irritated that it is all anyone can talk about. In the end, when he betrays her, he tells her that no man would dare to have her. Not after she had played such a large part in the execution of her first husband, George Boleyn.
