He grabs some tongs, throws a red-hot strip of iron on to the anvil, and begins pounding away. "Not quite the blade for a hero," Coll observes when Taran holds it up. Taran agrees, saying it looks like a sick snake.

Hen Wen, the white oracular pig, uses the magical letter sticks to foretell the future.

This is while Taran is first searching for Hen Wen in the forest. One of the warriors fallowing in the Horned King's wake is sees Taran and tries to kill him. Taran escapes with only a small wound.

Achren pretends to be nice so that Taran may let some information slip, but Gwydion warns him before he can speak, which angers Achren and she sends them to the dungeon. Glew does not appear until the third book, "The Castle of Llyr", and Gwyn the Hunter just passes by.

When Eilonwy drops her bauble into Taran's cell by mistake, she introduces herself. When he says his name she says, "That's lovely. I'm very glad to meet you. I suppose you're a lord, or a warrior, or a war leader, or a bard, or a monster. Though we haven't had any monsters for a long time." Taran is flattered that Eilonwy might have taken him for any of those.

Taran falls into the crevice, but somehow Eilonwy manages to miss it. When he can't get out, Taran tells Eilonwy to go ahead and tell Gywdion to leave before they're found out. But Eilonwy says, "You can't just sit here like a fly in a jug. That isn't going to help matters at all," and she jumps down into the crevice with him. That is when Taran calls HER a fool; though it turns out they are in another passageway that leads them out of the castle, not trapped in a crevice.

It is Fflewddur Fflam. Taran told Eilonwy to rescue "his friend" from another cell. Since he was the only other person in the dungeon, Eilonwy released Fflewddur. Taran realizes he didn't actually see Gwydion taken to a cell, he just guessed that's where he was.

Fflewddur is saying that he is a king, and describing his realm, but his harp strings keep jangling and breaking-especially when he says his subjects were sorry to see him leave for the life of a bard.

At first Taran is disgusted by the smell, but when Gugi offers to give up his small portion of honeycomb so Taran can have more, Taran doesn't think the odor is as objectionable.

It never outright tells you that Medwyn could be or is Noah, but you can pretty well guess. When they met Taran says, "I know who you are, you are Medwyn!" And Medwyn replies, "Am I now? Yes, I have been called Medwyn."

This lame ant brought Gwythyer Son of Greidawl the last flax seed needed to complete a bushel, and therefore saved Gwythyer from his father's anger.

The friends are sucked through the whirlpool into King Eiddileg's realm and are brought before him roughly.

Gurgi is the one who notices her, and when he tells them Taran accuses Eiddileg, saying, "You said nothing of Hen Wen." King Eiddileg replies, "You didn't ask." Still, he did save her from the Horned King.

Gwythaints are the spy-birds of the dark side. However, when Taran finds a young one caught and exhausted in a thorn bush, he saves its life. Later on it returns the favor, and then loses its own life.

When Taran awakes at Caer Dathyl, Eilonwy begins talking a mile a minute telling him what happened while he was unconscious. Taran gets a bit annoyed with her, but not as much as he would have when they first met; her chattering has grown on him.
