Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Rat-Man, Jansen, what is the 'killzone'?

Answer: The brain

Thomas, placed in a room at the end of "The Scorch Trials", ends up remaining there for twenty-six days before he's allowed to leave. The Rat-Man, who refers to himself as Jansen, comes in and explains that the trials are over; WICKED has used its variables on the candidates to determine their effect on the Flare's Killzone, the human brain, which deteriorates as it takes hold on the subject. Thomas is told that he is now immune to the Flare. As their final candidate, he's part of an elite group of people selected to be tested.

Thomas is sent out to meet with his friends, but they're subsequently told that they will be led to a device called a retractor to fix their memories and remove the Swipe, the item used to block out the past. They are also told which subjects still have the Flare-- Newt is one of them. Despite all of this, Thomas and Minho are still leery towards Teresa and Aris who claim that WICKED is still good.
2. The Launchers used by WICKED members use which of the following to bring down targets?

Answer: Electricity

As the subjects are split into groups and taken into their respective rooms for retraction, three refuse the treatment-- Thomas, Minho, and Newt. They're brought along regardless and Thomas runs into Brenda, now clearly working for WICKED. She runs up to him and warns him not to trust anyone except herself and Chancellor Paige. The three are held at Launcher-point before being taken elsewhere in the facility for holding. The next morning, they're awakened and told that they will be forced to take the procedure anyways, as it is of the utmost importance; en route to the lab, they try to make their escape but fail.

While Thomas is placed down on the slab, Brenda ends up assisting the three in their escape by sedating a guard and incapacitating the others. Using the Launchers, they're able to navigate through the building. They find themselves being watched by a Beetle Blade as they go; surprisingly there are few guards along the way, almost as though they'd been called away. That's when an alarm sounds and the lights go out.
3. Thomas and the others discover that Jorge is actually which of the following?

Answer: A pilot

The group heads to the armory to find all of the Launchers missing and Brenda shows her concern-- the Launchers are standard and would be likely to be carried; someone needed the spares. Surprisingly, Newt and Minho get into a fight, possibly because the disease is heightening in Newt's brain due to increased mental stress. Newt heads elsewhere for a few moments and returns with a note for Thomas; he says to read it only when the time is right.

Visiting the WICKED hangar, the group finds Jorge, safe and sound, though a berg is missing. He tells them that Teresa and the other Gladers took it earlier and made their escape. He can, however, fly them out in his own berg.

That's when the WICKED soldiers charge in with their Launchers. There's a gunfight, but everyone rushes to the berg. Brenda gets hit by an electrified shot but they get her into the craft. Thomas is hit at the last moment, but Newt and Minho save him at the last moment as he falls to the hangar floor. As he's pulled in, they take off.
4. To what city do Thomas and the others flee when they escape WICKED HQ?

Answer: Denver

On Brenda's suggestion, the group flies to the city of Denver, a protected locale quarantined off from much of the Flare outbreaks outside. Teresa and others were allegedly on their way there as well, and Brenda claims that they can find a former WICKED employee, Hans, to fix their brains and remove WICKED's tracking devices. The five escapees have a couple of Gatherings to discuss the possibilities and, since Newt is not immune to the Flare, he can't leave the berg and arouse suspicion.

The four travelers are tested and make their way into Denver via an entrance in a mall. As they head through, they're approached by a man who carries a note for them from an organization known as the Right Arm-- it's from Gally. Despite past events, Thomas decides to trust it.

They visit Gally that day and are informed that several people immune to the Flare have been disappearing from the city while small outbreaks have emerged throughout. The government is largely sick and covering up their diseases with Bliss, the delaying drug. WICKED likely wants to restart the trials to find a cure; Gally says that Teresa told him this. Thomas makes amends with Gally because he realizes that he never wanted to kill Chuck-- he was forced by WICKED. When Gally says that Hans has a bounty on his head, the group leaves to seek him out before it's too late.

They find Hans the next day and he agrees to help, but not before Thomas, unable to control his body and mind, is taken over and fights the procedure.
5. When the Flare is noticed in a cafe, which of these people is claimed by a bounty hunter?

Answer: Thomas

After a brief fight through Hans' apartment, the others manage to sedate Thomas and remove the activated device from his head (and Minho's). During this process, Thomas dreams of 'The Purge' where, at fifteen, he and Teresa were the only ones left to rebuild the killzone experiments in the maze. When he awakens, he solidifies the plan to assist Gally and the Right Arm.

Heading to a cafe, Brenda tries to talk to talk to Thomas alone (while Minho and Jorge head outside). When a nearby man is caught using Bliss to cover his Flare infection, Thomas stays behind and watches as men seal him off, containing the disease. One of these men holds Thomas captive and takes him to a van to be handcuffed and brought away. This man is subsequently shot by a policing vehicle controlled by Jansen-- the man was a bounty hunter looking for Immunes. Jansen requests that Thomas return as the final candidate for Newt's sake. When the others catch up to Thomas, they notice that their part of the city is oddly quiet.
6. Where does Thomas find Newt in the Crank Palace?

Answer: A bowling alley

As the four make their way through the city noting its eerie emptiness, they decide to stay overnight in a local motel. The next day is odd as there are clearly Cranks in the streets. They return to their berg to find that Newt has gone missing-- a note in the cockpit says that he was captured and taken outside the city to the Crank Palace, a quarantined 'city' for Cranks. They immediately decide to head to this location to bribe their way in and retrieve their friend.

When they arrive, they find Newt in a bowling alley armed with a Launcher. Though he hasn't completely lost it, it's clear that he's on his way. Angrily, he threatens to fire at them if they try to bring him along; he's particularly angry with Thomas though he can't figure out why. Considering his deteriorating state and his refusal to leave, they have no choice but to depart without him.

Fleeing from the Crank Palace, the four make their to return to Denver. On the way, Thomas decides to open the note from Newt and he discovers that it reads: "Kill me. If you've ever been my friend, kill me."
7. Which of the Gladers is discovered to have been captured by the Right Arm?

Answer: Teresa

Two days later, after landing in Denver, the four decide to leave the berg and seek out Gally. Unfortunately, when they open the door they're caught by bounty hunters in red shirts. They're each hooded, loaded into the back of a vehicle, and driven through the city to an unknown location.

When their hoods are taken off they find themselves in an underground room loaded with Immunes and, to their shock, they find Teresa and Aris who claim that they left WICKED after them since they were told that they escaped; some of their group-- including Frypan-- have been caught by WICKED. Now that they're all captured, Teresa vows to make it up to Thomas at all costs.

When they get their moment, Thomas and Minho jump the guards who, to their surprise, reveal that they work for the Right Arm. After a struggle, one of the guards, Lawrence, decides to lead a few to their boss and base of operations. Thomas decides only to take Brenda since he does not want to risk losing Minho should the worst happen. They take the van through Denver but, of course, part of the way is blocked by Cranks from the local palace...already invading the city.
8. What is the name of the head of the Right Arm?

Answer: Vince

After a struggle nearly resulting in their being torn apart by Cranks, Thomas, Brenda, and Lawrence are able to reach the Right Arm headquarters and they speak with Gally and the Right Arm leader, Vince. The plan, they discover, is to infiltrate WICKED's headquarters by using a lookalike scheme and selling their captured Immunes for further trials. Doing this, they'd be allowed to plant a device to knock out their electronically-enabled weapons, invade, and possibly take them down.

Thomas agrees and, leaving Brenda behind in the safety of Right Arm HQ, he, Lawrence, and a pilot head out into the city. On the way to the hangar, their van is hit and sustains a bit of damage, but the crash causes him to see Newt. In his rage, Newt tells Thomas that he got his characteristic limp from a suicide attempt in the maze and, if he ever cared about him, he'd hold true to the note. Thomas is forced to shoot one of his best friends to end his misery.

When they arrive at the hangar, Thomas heads onto the berg and falls asleep, unable to cope with his action.
9. To finish the blueprint, Jansen claims that which of these must be done?

Answer: A vivisection

After being flown northward to WICKED HQ, Thomas is dropped off outside and left to plant the disabling device from within on his own while reinforcements from the Right Arm follow a short time later. When Jansen lets him into the building, he's able to sneak the device into a cabinet in a bathroom.

Meeting with a small handful of scientists, Thomas is told that after all has come into place, to finish the blueprint they require his brain-- a vivisection would determine whether or not a cure can be found. Thomas claims that he needs time to consider this (though really he needs time to waste waiting for reinforcements) and they give it to him. When the berg arrives with the Right Arm, Thomas is forced into the lab and put under.

To his surprise, he wakes up in a bed having not been operated on. Beside him is a folder and a note from Chancellor Paige including a map. The note says that they do indeed have enough for a blueprint-- he needs to get his friends and the Immunes and get out of the facility using a flat-trans in a backdoor maintenance room. Of course, looking at the map, he realizes that the Immunes taken by WICKED are trapped in the maze.

Thomas finds the Right Arm but gets recaptured by Jansen who, now with the Flare, tries to attack him. Thomas is able to get away to Vince, Gally, and the others, reuniting with his friends. While Vince's forces set explosives, the others all agree to return to the maze to save the Immunes before the end of WICKED is upon them.
10. Who sacrifices themselves to save Thomas and help him escape from WICKED HQ?

Answer: Teresa

The Gladers return to the maze and run through the memorable corridors to the Glade where they reunite with Frypan and the others. They begin to organize a way to bring the hundreds of Immunes back through the flat-trans in WICKED HQ but, before they can depart, the bombs start to go off-- the blasts from above begin to rain down and crush people.

As many as can make it out do so, but upon returning to the control room, five Grievers start to emerge from their pods. Teresa tells Thomas how to defeat them (by pulling a handle on the inside) but he's left with one. He and Teresa manage to take it down with minor injuries.

Everyone reaches the Flat-Trans with Brenda's guidance and when Thomas heads inside he finds a shed. Opening the door, he finds idyllic, green pastures. He returns as the Immunes funnel through. Jansen, however, appears with WICKED forces, all infected by the Flare. In one final fight, Thomas personally brings down the Rat-Man, strangling him.

As the final Gladers try to make their escape, a blast knocks down part of the ceiling. Teresa, in an attempt to save Thomas' life, pushes him aside as the walls crash down on her. He's unable to save her. Minho and Brenda are able to pull him through the Flat-Trans just in time. While Thomas and Minho give each other a look of friendship and acceptance, Brenda sets fire to the shed, burning down the Flat-Trans and preventing anyone from tarnishing their new paradise.

About two hundred people with immunity to the Flare survive in a new home to give the world a new chance. After Chancellor Paige's plan not to construct further blueprints or conduct further trials becomes reality, it appears that humanity can start again and, perhaps, some of WICKED is good.
