When Rhys is dying, his advisors beg him to recall Rhodry from exile to avoid a bloody battle over the sucession to the gwerbretrhyn. Rhys does so, then as he dies he tries to explain why he has always hated Rhodry, but all he says is "It was mine Mam".

3. Who bound the spirit into "The Spirit Stone" of the title?

Answer: Loddlaen

When Dallandra finally frees the bound spirit from the stone, it tells her that it was told that only the "Mother of the murderer who bound it" could ever free it, and it had given up hope. Dallandra realises that it must have been Loddlaen who did it, and that he was a murderer.

This fact had previously been kept from her, all she knew was that he "died badly" and "broke Aderyn's heart".

4. Which God does Perryn become one of the last Priests of?

Answer: Kerun

Kerun is a God of the wild places, forests and wild animals and Perryn feels drawn to worship him, eventually becoming High Priest of his order. Nevyn determines that Perryn's soul is not Human, but never finds out what he is.

5. Which bird is sacred to the God Wymm?

Answer: Pelican

The temple of Wymm is on an island just off shore and the pelicans are sacred to him. He is the God of scribes and knowledge and his priests keep what are practically the only archives still in existance. They produce and bind books too, a rare and precious commodity.

6. How does Lady Angmar describe the "hefting of the shield" of Haen Marn?

Answer: A baleful thing

The 'shield' is a mysterious ritual that can only be used once, to save Haen Marn from direst peril. When it is used to save the island from the advancing Horsekin armies, it removes the island and all who live there from the Deverry world entirely. The next time we see the island, it has reappeared in Loch Ness in Scotland, some time in the past.

7. What is Ebany/Salamander's bird form when he flies?

Answer: Magpie

He becomes a magpie. Aderyn takes the form of an owl when he flies, while Dallandra becomes a "generic birdform" of no breed at all.

8. What are the colours of the pieces of silk the 'Great Stone of the West' is wrapped in?

Answer: Mottled, purple, orange, green, lavender

The 'Great Stone of the West' is an opal as big as a walnut, that "seemed to glow and breathe with life of its own". In one book we are told that Nevyn buys it at great cost in Bardek and has it formed into an orb for him, but in others we are told he spends hours and hours polishing and shaping it himself. Nevyn gives the Stone into the keeping of King Casyl in 983 and it is passed down the Royal line from King to Marked Prince ever after.

9. Brangwen has one incarnation as a man. Who is she in that incarnation?

Answer: Branoic

Brangwen is reborn as Branoic the silver dagger in the segment of story that takes place between 835 and 843. Branoic is betrothed to Lady Lillorigga, Nevyn's apprentice, but he is killed in battle before their marriage can take place.

10. What must true bards never do, on pain of losing their bardic abilities and falling foul of the Gods?

Answer: Learn to read

Bards may not learn to read. They must memorise all the bardic lore and songs, poems and ballads of their repertoire.

11. What form is Jill's 'special' friend among the Wildfolk?

Answer: Grey gnome

Jill's grey gnome is her friend from when she is a tiny child until she dies and then he reappears to her next incarnation as Branna. He recognizes her soul and is happy to find her again.

12. What present does Salamander buy for Marka in the bazaar when they first meet?

Answer: A set of fortune telling tiles

Marka feels like she 'knows' the tiles even though she has never seen them before. Salamander buys them for her because he recognises her soul and knows she was his wife in her previous incarnation. He courts her and marries her again as Marka because he loves her so much.

13. Who is the first of Evandar's people to be born into human form?

Answer: Elessario

Elessario or Elessi is born as the first daughter of Prince Daralanteriel and Carramena. Elessi is the 'daughter' Alshandra feels has been stolen from her, and the reason Alshandra starts her 'cult' which leads to the wars between the Horsekin and the other races. Eventually all of Evandars people follow Elessi and are born into the world to fulfill their Wyrd.

14. Who is Neb's younger brother?

Answer: Clae

When we first meet Neb, who is Nevyn reborn, he is sixteen and his brother Clae is eight. They are warned by the wildfolk and flee when Horsekin raiders attack their village and kill or capture everyone else.

15. When the wildfolk are trying to lead Nevyn to the Great Stone of the West after it was stolen, they mime a man riding a horse. Which town do they mean?

Answer: Marcmwr

The 'baddies' steal the Great Stone of the West because they believe they can use it to harm the High King. Nevyn recovers it with help from Jill, Rhodry, and the Wildfolk.
