Eddie is an 83-year-old maintenance man at an amusement park when he is killed in a freak accident. He discovers heaven is meeting five people who help explain his life. These people show Eddie scenes from Earth that are significant to him. The fourth person he meets is his wife, Marguerite.

She died many years earlier, but when Eddie meets her again, she is young like when they first met. They spend a short period of time together in heaven.

The Blue Man is the first person Eddie meets in heaven. He is blue because, while he was alive, he ingested a poison that, over a period of time, turned his skin blue. Eddie is horrified when the Blue Man reveals Eddie had unwittingly caused the Blue Man's death.

The Captain is the second person Eddie meets. The Captain takes Eddie back to a scene when they were both prisoners of war. Eddie is furious when he discovers the Captain was the one who shot him in the leg. Until this point, Eddie did not know who had partially crippled him for most of his life.

Ruby is the third person Eddie meets in heaven. Ruby's husband had built the amusement park where Eddie worked most of his life and where he finally died. Although he did not know her while alive, she knew things about Eddie's father from her own life.

Tala is the fifth person Eddie meets. She is a small girl whom Eddie accidentally-and unknowingly-kills when he sets on fire the village where he had been taken prisoner.

Eddie, the Captain and the other soldiers set the abandoned village on fire as they make their escape. Eddie, however, thinks he sees someone sculking about the huts as the flames rise. Eddie heads back into the fire. Thinking Eddie has lost his mind-as sometimes happens to soldiers in wartime-the captain shoots Eddie in the leg.

The Blue Man explains that because he died, Eddie had lived. He tells Eddie that death doesn't just take someone, it misses someone else. Eddie is touched by the fact the Blue Man had died in his stead, but they were only strangers on Earth. The Blue Man defines "strangers" for Eddie.

Eddie confesses he felt anger at Marguerite for dying so young. She was the only woman he loved. Marguerite explains that love takes a different form-memory. She tells Eddie that life ends, but love does not. Eddie requests she change herself to look like she did the year she died. She does and they slow dance to accordion music from when they got married in a Chinese restaurant.

The Captain had said this about their captors. Immediately after they had escaped and the Captain had shot Eddie, the Captain is killed. Eddie, who was unconscious, never discovered how he had gotten shot until the Captain reveals it to him in Heaven. He explains to Eddie how it was the only way to stop him from heading into the fire and probably losing his life.

Eddie and his father had a difficult relationship. Ruby knew things about Eddie's father that helped put things into perspective for him.
