Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Hannah's mother's name?

Answer: Nancy

The book starts with Nancy bringing her daughter to Elmholm to her father, Matthew Thorndale. On the way they meet Ned and his grandfather, and rest for a short while in their home; Nancy is in the last hours of her life, dying from consumption.
2. What did Ann Thornton do to Hannah when she found her with her jewellery?

Answer: she whipped her

The whipping was so intense that Hannah was bedridden for days, and showed the marks on her back and legs for years afterwards. When her father discovered what happened, he whipped Ann in turn, and forced her to accept Hannah into the household as his child. Ann was to do this, but she was never to speak to her, and always referred to her as 'the Girl'.
3. Hannah's father has four children already, John, Robert, Margaret and - what was the name of the fourth?

Answer: Betsy

Hannah was hated with intensity by her father's wife, and Betsy (short for Beatrice), a miniature of her mother, imitated Anne in her dislike. A spiteful girl, she was to add to Hannah's unhappiness in the house, almost cancelling out the love and companionship between Hannah and the other three children.
4. Who beat up Matthew and left him for dead?

Answer: Bill Warrington

Matthew, receiving no comfort from his wife, Ann, was seeing Sally Warrington on a regular basis. On one occasion their warning system did not work, and he came into her cottage when her husband was there. Bill beat him up, and Matthew was later to die of his wounds.
5. Immediately after Hannah's wedding to Fred, the vicar gave her a letter from her dead mother. Did this letter tell her that Matthew was not her father?

Answer: Yes

On hearing this news, Hannah ran out of the church to see her 'brother' John, with whom she shared a teenage crush. It was too late. She was Mrs Loam now, and there was nothing that could be done about it.
6. What happened to Ned after he told Hannah that he would have married her if she had waited a little while?

Answer: he fell into a man trap

Hannah ran away when she realised that Ned loved her, and he chased after her as she was running towards a man-trap area. In saving her, he fell and his hand got caught in the trap. The doctor was to take two and a half fingers off; Fred had caught up with his runaway bride by this time, and the doctor forced him to help in the operation. Fred then carried his bride, ablaze with fever from exposure, home to his butcher's shop.
7. On which day of the week did Hannah walk across to Pele House to see Ned on a regular basis?

Answer: Sunday

Hannah had been married for a year and a half before she started to see Ned on a regular basis (until that time she was alone in her misery living with Fred and his mother). Daisy Loam would attend chapel every Sunday, and if Fred did not take her, he went elsewhere to relax; they were used to Hannah not attending a place of worship, and being more likely to rest at home or take a walk.
8. Where did Daisy hide the money?

Answer: in her bed

Hannah took the paperwork from Daisy's box to the Solicitor's office, and he suggested that the profits from the previous four years could be hidden in the house somewhere. When Hannah admitted that Daisy slept on a box bed, he said it was likely hidden there. With help from Bella, Tessie and Margaret, she was able to retrieve it and take it to the office for safe-keeping.
9. Unknown to anyone but Hannah, Fred did leave a Will, scribbled with pencil on a square of newspaper. To whom did he leave everything?

Answer: his mother

Before Fred died he learnt that Hannah had been seeing Ned on a regular basis for a long time. Blinded with rage and wounded pride, he beat Ned up, and then succumbed to typhoid fever, which killed him. His actual Will read 'I'm feeling very bad. If I am to go I want me mother to have everything. And it's up to her what she does for the other one. Fred Loam.' Hannah did not admit to having found this because had she done so Daisy (who was well provided for) would kick Bella, Tessie and Margaret out of the house they were going to turn into a teashop.
10. What did Hannah name her son?

Answer: Matthew

Named, presumably, for her 'father'. We only hear his name once, when Hannah tells her mother-in-law. We don't discover her reaction, for Hannah left the room.
