Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the house in which Thomas Mallen was living at the start of the book?

Answer: High Banks

High Banks was later sold to cover debts while Thomas Mallen, his son and his two nieces went to live in the cottage which had been left to the two girls.
2. Was Barbara older than Constance?

Answer: Yes

There was not a lot of difference in age between the girls, but there was a world of difference in temperament; while Barbara was of a more serious turn, Constance was fun-loving - until life with Donald changed her.
3. Anna Brigmore was able to take a good number of treasures from the house before the bailiffs came. What did Thomas Mallen do with the money made from selling them?

Answer: he paid bail for his son

Dick Mallen had injured a bailiff in a scuffle and had been arrested. While on bail, he took what little his father had left and fled the country. Later we learn that he died fairly rich, and the money he left was to go to his sister.
4. Although seemingly paying court to Barbara, Donald actually proposed to Constance, and took her over the hills to the Radlet farm. What relationship was Donald to Constance?

Answer: he was her uncle's son

Donald Radlet was the result of Thomas Mallen's raping Jane Collins. After marrying Michael Radlet, Jane also had his son, Matthew.
5. It could be said that Constance married Donald 'on the rebound', for her hopes had been dashed by a letter which told her that the man she expected a proposal from had become engaged to someone else. What was this man's name?

Answer: Will Headley

Pat Ferrier was to court Constance many years later, only to disappoint her by proposing to the daughter of the man who was to settle at High Banks.
6. From what illness was Matthew Radlet dying?

Answer: consumption

This was tuberculosis; many people suffered from this disease in the mid 1800s, and it was a slow killer. If the family had the money, it would be possible to move to the continent to live longer, but in the majority of cases, such as Matthew's, this was not a viable option.
7. Why was Thomas out in the bad weather when Barbara came back from the farm?

Answer: he had arranged a tryst with Agnes Moorehead

Mistaking Barbara for Agnes, Thomas had his way with her in the darkness of the barn. When he realised what he had done, Thomas killed himself, never to know that Barbara was left pregnant.
8. What relationship was Donald Radlet to the newly born Barbara Farrington?

Answer: he was her half brother

Donald was the son of Jane Collins and Thomas Mallen, while baby Barbara was the result of Thomas Mallen raping Barbara Farrington. He was also her uncle-by-marriage, as his wife, Constance, was Barbara's sister, and thus baby Barbara's aunt.
9. How much money was left by Dick Mallen for his closest relative, after his death in France?

Answer: £2,500

This money went to his sister, Bessie. This upset Anna as Barbara was pregnant with Dick's sibling and all they had was the £100 a year which had been left to Barbara.
10. Wishing to gain control of the money, Donald was determined to take baby Barbara after Barbara died in childbirth. Who stopped him?

Answer: Matthew Radlet

Very close to death, Matthew insisted on accompanying Donald when he went to fetch the baby, and was able to pull his half-brother over the edge of the road with him. The fall was to kill them both. This story continues in 'The Mallen Girl'.
