Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the primary job of one of the main characters, Mikael Blomkvist?

Answer: Journalist

Mikael Blomkvist was primarily a journalist. At the start of the book, he was considered guilty of libel against wealthy industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, which led to a short spell in prison. Blomkvist had a strange love-hate relationship with Lisbeth Salander, the 'girl with the dragon tattoo', and had a strong moral compass.
2. Which of these activities was Lisbeth Salander highly skilled at, according to the book?

Answer: Computer hacking

Lisbeth Salander had a photographic memory and was highly skilled in computer hacking. This ability came to her naturally and with ease. Her mentality was often 'an eye for an eye' - if someone treated her well, she would treat them well in return. However, if someone wronged her, and many people did, she would seek revenge with little remorse.

She would probably be considered the main female protagonist of the book.
3. A man called Henrik Vanger enlisted the help of Mikael Blomkvist to help find his long-missing great-niece. What was her name?

Answer: Harriet

Harriet Vanger was a much-loved great-niece of Henrik Vanger. One fateful day, she went missing, and Henrik Vanger could not find a trace of her body. When Mikael Blomkvist lost the case against Wennerstrom, he offered to give him solid evidence against Wennerstrom and a large sum of money...but only if Blomkvist could finally help locate his great-niece, whether she be dead or alive. Blomkvist accepted and moved to Hedeby Island, putting a hold on his other work.
4. Nils Bjurman was the first assigned guardian of Lisbeth Salander, and they both loved each other very much.

Answer: False

Lisbeth Salander had a highly troubled past. She was placed under the care of Holger Palmgren, however, when he was taken ill, she was moved to Nils Bjurman. Whilst she trusted and respected Palmgren, she hated Nils Bjurman, who sexually abused her and took more control of her finances than she wanted.

However, Salander taped the sexual abuse and eventually got her revenge on Bjurman, making sure he would stay far away from her in future.
5. 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is the first in the trilogy of books written by Stieg Larsson. What is the name of the collective trilogy, which is also shared by the name of the office Mikael Blomkvist works at?

Answer: Millennium

The Millennium offices were initially part-owned by Mikael Blomkvist, along with Erika Berger and Christer Malm. This name is also given to the trilogy of books: 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' being the first in this trilogy. In 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', Blomkvist does not spend too much time at the office, however it features more heavily in later books in the trilogy. Blomkvist had a casual sexual relationship with Erika Berger despite her having a boyfriend.
6. In which country is most of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' set?

Answer: Sweden

Stieg Larsson was a Swedish author and he set most of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' in Sweden, although London and Australia did also feature. Most of the locations within the book were actually real Swedish towns, other than Hedestad and Hedeby Island where the Vangers were based.
7. When Mikael Blomkvist first approached Lisbeth Salander, what did he want her to help him find?

Answer: A murderer

In his search for the missing Harriet Vanger, Blomkvist enlisted the help of Lisbeth Salander in finding the backgrounds of names from a list he believed to be murder victims. He wanted to find out if there was a connection between the names and verses, and if so, what that connection was and who was behind the murders. Salander helped to find a Biblical connection between the names - each of the names had a direct or indirect Biblical influence. Disturbingly, so did their murders. For example, a girl called Magda Lovisa was found murdered in a barn and tied up in a horse stall based on the Leviticus verse "If a woman approaches any beast and lies with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them".
8. Who held Mikael Blomkvist captive and was eventually killed in a car crash when Lisbeth Salander gave chase to him?

Answer: Martin Vanger

Martin Vanger followed in the footsteps of his father, Gottfried Vanger, and was a serial rapist. He would entice women into his house and keep them captive until such a time he became bored of them. Then he would kill them and sow their bodies out to sea.

When he became aware Blomkvist and Salander were too close to knowing the truth about him, he forced Blomkvist at gunpoint into his dungeon and was going to asphyxiate him. However, Salander entered, struck him with a golf club and freed Blomkvist.

In his escape, Martin Vanger panicked and crashed into a truck, ending his life.
9. Which of the Vanger relatives had known the location of Henrik Vanger's missing great-niece all along?

Answer: Anita Vanger

Harriet Vanger, like Lisbeth Salander, was also a rape victim. In Harriet's case, however, she killed the perpetrator, who happened to be Martin Vanger's father, Gottfried Vanger. In turn, Martin Vanger also began to sexually abuse Harriet Vanger. To keep away from him, relative Anita Vanger helped her escape Sweden and she set up a new life for herself in Australia. Anita Vanger had also left Sweden and lived in London.

She kept Harriet's location safe because she feared Martin Vanger and what he would do if he found out where she was.
10. Irene Nesser and Monica Sholes were false identities used by Lisbeth Salander for what primary purpose?

Answer: To steal Wennerstrom's money

Near the end of the book, Salander adopted false identities Irene Nesser and Monica Sholes to gain access to Hans-Erik Wennerstrom's secret bank account and lift the vast masses of money contained within. This is considered to be justice for Wennerstrom's misdeeds, not only against Blomkvist but against women and other people in general.

In addition, she hacked into Wennerstrom's data files and gave Blomkvist enough information to publish a book about his misdeeds.
