Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why was Jonas skipped in the Ceremony of Twelve?

Answer: Jonas had the most important job in the community, and the entire community had to know what an honor it was

When Jonas noticed he had been skipped, he was afraid to look back at his parents, because he knew they were ashamed of him.
2. When Jonas and Asher were playing catch with an apple, Jonas noticed the apple had changed while it was in the air. What was the change?

Answer: The apple had turned red for a brief second

The first time it happened, Jonas was startled, because he did not know yet what the color red was. The apple was slightly bruised, but not while it was still in the air.
3. Which of Jonas' rules startled him the most?

Answer: "You may lie"

Jonas was shocked to discover this, because he was brought up thinking it was a horrible thing to lie. He didn't think lying was necessary, until he found out his dad was lying to him.
4. The first night the newborn Gabriel slept in Jonas' room, Jonas slept through Gabriel's shrieking and crying, and Gabriel was released the next morning.

Answer: False

The first time Gabriel started crying, Jonas woke up and gave him the memory of sailing, which allowed the both of them to sleep quietly the whole night.
5. Why did Jonas react the way he did when he saw Asher and his friends playing war?

Answer: He knew what real war was like, and it was far from the playful way his friends were doing it

Asher was mad at Jonas for breaking up the game, and apologized for any discomfort he might have brought to Jonas. When Jonas tried to explain, Asher kept cutting him off until Jonas accepted his apology.
6. After a few months of training, what did Jonas stop doing?

Answer: Taking the pill for his stirrings

From all of those memories, Jonas developed a sense of right and wrong, which told him to stop taking the pill. Since he knew emotions were not disturbing, he saw no point in taking the pill when it was really the community that was in the wrong.
7. On the day Jonas asked about release, the Giver told about how the previous Receiver-in-training came to be released. He also thought Jonas should watch a release to see what it was really about. Towards the end of the video, what did Jonas' father do to the smaller twin after he released it?

Answer: He put it in a cardboard box and dropped it in a chute

When the video was over, Jonas went into a huge rage of anger and sadness. The fact that his dad had been lying to him was so unbearable, Jonas put his foot down and refused to go home. During the time Jonas stayed in the Annex, he and the Giver threw together a plan that would involve Jonas faking his death and heading for the real Elsewhere. Jonas wanted the Giver to go with him, but the Giver said he had to stay and help the citizens stay under control.

This is also when we find out the previous Receiver-in-training was the Giver's daughter.
8. When Jonas returned home, he heard from his dad that Gabriel was to be released, forcing him to abandon the original plan, steal the leftover food from the streets, steal his dad's bike, take Gabriel with him, and convince Asher to come with him.

Answer: False

He did all of that stuff except for convincing Asher to come with him. Asher knew nothing about Jonas' plan to leave the community. Even if Asher did know, he wouldn't have let Jonas leave. Since Jonas now knew what releasing someone really meant, he couldn't bear to imagine Gabriel killed and dropped in a chute. Why someone would kill an adorable baby like Gabriel, I haven't the faintest idea.
9. Many times during Jonas' journey to Elsewhere, he encountered a plane that was to be avoided at all costs. Why?

Answer: It had heat-seeking sensors which could sense body heat

Since Jonas knew about the planes, he got rid of their body heat by transmitting cold memories through the both of them. Pretty soon, Gabriel could shout when a plane was nearby. Then came the time when the planes stopped coming.
10. At the end of the book, Jonas and Gabriel rode a sled down a very steep hill. What did Jonas think he heard, but wasn't quite sure?

Answer: Music

Jonas couldn't be sure if he had really heard music or not, because he wasn't taught how to Hear beyond, only See beyond. After that, the book ends to leave us thinking what happens to them after they're down the hill.
