'The Green Mile' - Film vs Book Quiz

This is one of the best book to film adaptations I have seen. There were hardly any changes made to the story for filming. If you've read the book you should know the answers to these questions!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film does not tell us what happened to Melinda Moores. According to the book, she died of a stroke five years after John 'cured' her.

Answer: False

The book says that she died of a heart attack in 1943 and actually outlived Hal (who died of a stroke) by 2 years.
2. The film does not mention what happened to Paul's wife, Jan. How does the book say she died?

Answer: Bus crash

It happened in 1956. Paul was also in the crash (they were both passengers), but Paul was the only person not seriously hurt. He thought he saw John Coffey at the crash site and shouted out for him to help Jan.
3. In the film, the last we see of Mr Jingles is when he is asleep in his cigar box at the end. What happens to him at the end of the book?

Answer: He dies of natural causes

He dies in front of Paul and Elaine after Brad Dolan (a nasty orderly at the old peoples' home) discovers why Paul goes on walks everyday.
4. In the film, Burt Hammersmith is John Coffey's Lawyer. In the book who is he?

Answer: A reporter

I'm not sure why they changed this detail!
5. The film is set in 1935. What year is the book set in?

Answer: 1932

They had to change the year for the film, because they wanted to use the film 'Top Hat' as the movie that John Coffey watched - also something that didn't happen in the book.
6. In the film, Mr Jingles reappears to Paul at the prison after John Coffey's execution. Where does Paul find him in the book?

Answer: At Georgia Pines

Paul finds him on the kitchen steps of the nursing home and instantly knows it is him.
7. In the book, Hal Moores does not oversee John Coffey's execution. Who does it for him?

Answer: Curtis Anderson

Curtis Anderson was the warden's chief assistant. Jack van Hay was another guard who pulled the switch at executions. Brad Dolan was the unkind orderly at Georgia Pines Nursing Home. Homer Cribus was the County Sheriff.
8. In the book, Mr Jingles is initially called something else by Brutus Howell. What is it?

Answer: Steamboat Willy

In the book, Mr Jingles appears a few times before Del arrives and looks in all the cells as if he is looking for someone, who of course turns out to be Del. It's Del who names him Mr Jingles after saying that the mouse whispered it to him.
9. In the book, Paul finds out that Wild Bill killed the girls by researching it rather than John 'showing' it to him. What was his final clue that convinced him John didn't do it?

Answer: John couldn't tie Paul's shoelaces

If he couldn't tie Paul's shoelaces, then he couldn't have re-tied the pack of sandwiches he had when he was found with the dead girls (The prosecution claimed he had re-tied the sandwiches after taking the sausages out, which were used to befriend the Dettericks' dog before killing it).
10. At the beginning of the book, there is another prisoner on the Green Mile. What was his nickname?

Answer: The President

He got transferred to C Block with a life sentence after Arlen Bitterbuck was executed, but died 12 years later when someone drowned him in a dye vat.
