Relius was offered, after a fashion, a farm in the Gede Valley, when Eugenides goes to see him in prison to pardon him. "You can retire to a farm in the Gede Valley and keep goats, and be loyal to whomever you want, I don't care." Costis's family has held theirs for a long time.

His sister writes that they have a new calf and a new cousin, but she and Costis both care more about the calf.

The queen cannot reduce the Guard because of divisiveness in her barons. The King and Relius seem to agree that the Guard must be reduced. The king believes it's because, at some point in time, the Guard could choose or remove a ruler at will. "...like using a wolf to guard the farm. It may keep off the other wolves, but sooner or later it will eat you."

Ornon is frustrated and concerned by Eugenides not taking a controlling hand in Attolia. Ornon may have had better feelings about Eugenides, if Eugenides hadn't relieved him of his sheep.

Answer: Dite

Erondites the Younger, called Dite, is fiercely in love with the queen. After a private conversation, Dite begins to fully support the king. Although Dite is his father's heir, his father refuses to support him. Eugenides has Dite exiled to save him.

Answer: Sejanus

Sejanus was the leader of the king's attendants, although he was plotting with his father against Eugenides. Because Erondites the Elder had more land than the next four barons and was open to blackmailing others, Eugenides found him a threat and took down his house. Sejanus was imprisoned.

Answer: Laecdomon

Laecdomon is in Aristogiton's squad. Laecdomon was the one who lured the king's guard away just before the assassination attempt. Laecdomon's family lives in Erondite's demesne and as Erondites hates the king, seems to believe his family will be rewarded if the king dies.

Answer: Aulus

Aulus is part of the "larger ball and chain" that Attolia threatens Eugenides with, when he complains about having to have his attendants with him all the time. He introduces Aulus and Boagus as his kinsmen to Costis, telling him "Watch out for Aulus... Like the bull he resembles, he's been known to crush people with one misstep." Apparently a prince, Aulus says they will leave as soon as he wins a bet with the Eddisian ambassador.

Answer: Phresine

Phresine appears to care very much about her Queen and Eugenides. She puts lethium in his food so he'll sleep after being wounded. When he's bored, she tells him a story. Eugenides gives her lethium later. "She gave it to me first.".

Answer: Philia

Costis prays to her and his god Miras that Eugenides will be okay, after finding out that the king was in the garden with no guards. Costis knows he will never be able to afford them. While taking Eugenides back to his rooms, the king tells him that the palace treasury would probably be willing to foot the bill, as the offering was made on behalf of the king.

Answer: Eugenides

People believe that the assassination was faked, or that Teleus and Costis killed the assassins and gave the king credit. Nobody really knows what happened until the fight with Laecdomon, when Eugenides takes his sword and beats him with it. Teleus says it isn't possible to take a sword by the blade from an opponent, until Eugenides shows him the healing scar on his palm.
