Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which form are the twins put in when they first arrive at Kingscote School?

Answer: Third Remove

All the other Marlow girls have always been in A forms so Lawrie and Nick are devastated to be in the Remove. They have both been ill which is why they start at Kingscote later than the others and why they are behind. Nicola goes into IIIA after one term and Lawrie after two.
2. What are the two photographs Nicola has on her bedside table at school?

Answer: Giles' ship and Nelson

Rowan tells her "it would show nicer feeling, Nicky dear, if you had Giles instead of his ship and perhaps an expensively framed cabinet portrait of Mother and Father instead of Nelson." Nicola grins and carries on, too used to being teased about Nelson and the Navy to care.
3. What are the names of Karen's three step-children?

Answer: Charles, Rose, Phoebe

Karen leaves Oxford unexpectedly after just two terms when she announces that she is going to marry Edwin, a historian some twenty years older than herself with three children. They are usually called Chas, Rose and Fob. To begin with, they all move into Trennels but eventually they have their own home in the Tranter's cottage.
4. When Nicola first goes hawking with Patrick, in "Falconer's Lure" how many hawks does he have?

Answer: 3

He has three hawks: Jael, an eyess who is accidently shot by Peter; Regina, a passager who makes off towards the end of the book; and The Sprog, a merlin who Nicola takes back to school with her in "End of Term". Actually, the hawks belong to Cousin Jon but when he is killed in a plane crash early in the book, Patrick assumes responsibility for the hawks.
5. Who wrote the Gondal stories, around which much of "Peter's Room" is based?

Answer: The Bronte sisters

The Bronte sisters, especially Emily, enjoyed creating the fantastical worlds of Gondal and Angria which so capture the imagination of Patrick Merrick and most of the younger Marlows (with the notable exception of Nicola).
6. With which Marlow sister does Patrick Merrick become romantically involved?

Answer: Ginty

Ginty, "the one with the real looks" is Patrick's first girlfriend. Nicola is jealous, not so much of the relationship itself but its exclusivity which spoils her friendship with Patrick as shown in "Peter's Room". In "The Attic Term" Ginty illegally telephones Patrick from school most nights until she is caught apparently dictating an O-level question to him.
7. How is the final wicket taken in the Cricket Cup Final?

Answer: run out

Lois Sanger, desperate to win on her last day at Kingscote, is run out when Nicola, expertly fielding, throws the ball from the boundary to hit the stumps. Antonia Forest likens Nicola's feat with that of Mr Tallboy in Dorothy L. Sayers' "Murder Must Advertise".
8. Which Marlow sibling does NOT appear in "Run Away Home"?

Answer: Ginty

Ginty has gone to spend the holidays with Monica, who missed a term of school due to a car accident. For Ginty this is an excellent excuse to avoid the inevitable row over her behaviour in "The Attic Term". Giles and Peter are both home for Christmas and Karen and her steps make an appearance too.
9. In which modern-day Marlow book does Nicola learn that her ancestor Nicholas was married to Bess Burby, probably the daughter of famous Elizabethan actor, Richard Burbage?

Answer: The Cricket Term

Edwin, Karen's husband, is researching the farm-log and he tells Nicola about Nicholas. As well as being an actor, he also served with Walter Raleigh on the Ark Royal - a fact which delights Navy-mad Nicola!
10. Nicholas Marlow plays a leading role in the opening night performance of which play in "The Players and the Rebels"?

Answer: Twelfth Night

He plays Viola in Twelfth Night, in front of Elizabeth I, despite his voice beginning to break. This is his last performance as a woman with Shakespeare's company. Christopher Marlowe, who wrote Dr Faustus, was no relation to the Marlow family but it was he who brought Nicholas to London to be a player.
