Robin had saved Sir Richard from poverty by giving him a sizeable chunk of money to pay off the Prior of Emmet, who was strangling Sir Richard with fines and interest. Sir Richard paid back the money, and never lost an opportunity afterward to do Robin and his men a good turn.

Little John asked the friars for a pittance to see him on his way. When they claimed that they had no money, Little John (who was disguised as a barefoot friar) insisted that they kneel down in the road and pray that Saint Dunstan send them money. He then took from the friars everything they had on them over and above the amount he'd asked Saint Dunstan to send for them, saying that obviously it was intended for him.

His lack of knowledge of the beggars' cant gave him away. The beggars pounced on him. He beat them up and took their money, so the adventure was a success even if his attempts to pass himself off as a beggar were pathetic.

Robin learned of the hiding place by pretending to be a fellow ruthless businessman. He took the shoes and sent the Corn Engrosser on his way with a warning that if he ever entered Sherwood again, he'd lose more than just his money.

Robin wanted to keep the bishop busy so that he wouldn't sabotage the plan to help Sir Richard of the Lea pay off his debts to the Prior of Emmet.

The bishop's men accosted the pair and took Quince off and let Robin get away.

The ruse went well until Sir Richard of the Lea came to warn Robin that the king was seeking him. Sir Richard recognized the king and fell to his knees.

But the happy times didn't return. The king waged war with Robin, and the guilt of precipitating so many deaths of so many good men led Robin to fall into his final decline.

He took ill and went to his cousin, the Prioress of Kirklees, to be bled. Hoping to win favor with the king, the prioress cut an artery instead of vein and left Robin in a tower to bleed to death.
