Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who abused Dave when he was a child?

Answer: His mother

He was probably around six when she started abusing him. Before that, she was a wonderful woman who cared for her family.
2. What is Chapter 2 known as?

Answer: Good Times

This chapter talks about what David's life was like before he was abused. "Bad Boy" was Chapter 3, "The Fight for Food" was Chapter 4, and "The Accident was Chapter 5.
3. In which chapter is David rescued from his mother?

Answer: The Rescue

"The Rescue" is the first chapter of the book. The rest of the book is Dave's life before "The Rescue." I believe the reason he did this is so the reader knows there is a happy ending. The chapter "Saved" is something I made up.
4. Which of these horrible things did Dave's mother not do to him?

Answer: Electrocuted him

David is lucky to be alive. Some of the things he went through are brutal.
5. "Of all Mother's punishments, I hated the gas chamber game the most." What did Dave mean by "gas chamber"?

Answer: Dave was locked in the bathroom with a mixture of Clorox and ammonia

Clorox and ammonia, when mixed, makes a fine gray mist. When Dave first breathed it in, his throat felt like it was on fire. After a few minutes, it was raw. He managed to survive the torture by using a rag as a gas mask and breathed clean air from a small heating vent.
6. Dave's abuse case was ranked the third worst case out of 38,000 cases in Californian history.

Answer: True

I found this out when Oprah reviewed his book. I had to watch it in school.
7. What was the longest amount of time David went without food?

Answer: 10 days

There were several reasons for this. One reason was because Dave's mother wouldn't feed feed him if he didn't meet the time limit on his chores and another reason was because of her new "game" called the "you have two minutes to eat" game. In that "game," she would leave a plate of food in front of him and tell him he had two minutes to eat.

However she wasn't truthful and snatched it from him before he could eat it. However, the next time she tried the "game" he ate the food before she could snatch it.
8. At school David managed to win an election to name the school paper. Mr. Ziegler then made a note for David to take to his mother telling her about how proud she should be that Dave named the school paper and how he was one of the top pupils in his class. When David's mother read the note, what did she do?

Answer: Tore the note into pieces

After she ripped it, David tried to put the letter back together again because Mr. Ziegler made positive comments on him on that note. It was impossible to put the note back together, so David sadly threw the pieces of paper into the trash.
9. David never forgave his mother for what she did.

Answer: False

Actually he did forgive her. "A Child Called It" is part one of three books on Dave Pelzer's life. "A Man Named Dave", the conclusion to Dave's autobiography, is his life 18 through 40. At one point, his mother dies of a heart attack and he looks at one of her old pictures and he forgives her.
Note: The second book was called "The Lost Boy", which is about his teens.
10. In which chapter does David's parents separate?

Answer: The Lord's Prayer

"The Lord's Prayer" is the seventh chapter, which is the final chapter before the Epilogue. Sadly for David, his dad didn't get custody of him. Also, with his father gone, his mother could be very vicious towards Dave. Thanks for playing my first Literature quiz. Please rate it and be sure to play my other quizzes.
