Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Merry Wives of Windsor" Sir John Falstaff, who had already appeared in earlier plays by William Shakespeare, got the major role this time. What was he like?

Answer: Overweight, obnoxious and loud

Sir John Falstaff appeared in both parts One and Two of "Henry IV" and in "Henry V". It has been suggested that "The Merry Wives of Windsor" was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I, but there is no evidence to prove this to be the case.

Although Falstaff was a jolly man, he was well past his prime and living on his memories, deluded no doubt, by the copious amounts of alcohol that he consumed on a daily basis.
2. To how many wives does the title of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" refer?

Answer: Two

Mistress Ford and Mistress Page were the wives two rich men in Windsor. When Falstaff arrived in the town he had almost run out of money and decided to introduce himself to the two women, seduce them and gain access to their husbands' assets. The confidence brought on by alcoholic consumption was rather misplaced, as we shall see.
3. Sir John Falstaff wrote almost identical love letters to "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and sat back and waited for his plans to work. What did he not know that caused his plans to backfire?

Answer: The wives were best friends

Mistress Ford and Mistress Page were the best of friends who shared everything, including the love letters that arrived unexpectedly. Although they were merry, they were actually good and faithful wives. Neither of them was interested in men other than their husbands, specially not the overweight and aging Lothario that was Sir John Falstaff. They hatched a plot to teach him a lesson.
4. While "The Merry Wives of Windsor" were planning the downfall of Sir John Falstaff, a certain Mistress Anne Page had three prospective suitors. Which of the following was NOT one of them?

Answer: Parson Evans

Parson Hugh Evans attempted to help Master Slender in his effort to woo the girl. Unfortunately, he fell foul of Doctor Caius, a hot blooded Frenchmen who called him out in a duel. Meanwhile, Mistress Anne was busy falling for Master Fenton.
5. Sir John Falstaff was bribed to approach one of "The Merry Wives of Windsor", by one of the husbands in disguise, who wanted to check upon his wife's fidelity. Neither knew the fate planned. What did the ladies do to Falstaff?

Answer: Hid him under dirty laundry and then tipped him into the river

When Sir John Falstaff arrived for his assignation, his overwhelming belief in his own attraction and powers of seduction blinded him to the situation. The ladies persuaded him to hide in the laundry basket and when the husband arrived, hoping to catch his wife out, the ladies ordered the "washing" be dumped in the river.
6. Taking the rejection by "The Merry Wives of Windsor" as the final hurdle before they succumb to his charms, Sir John Falstaff returned. The second visit ended with him being beaten up. Why was this?

Answer: He was dressed up as the old aunt of a servant

Sir John Falstaff was dressed as the aunt of a servant, known as the fat woman of Brentford. The husband, being thwarted in his plans to catch his wife out, took his frustration out on the unwanted visitor and beat "her" before throwing "her" into the street.

Brentford is in Western London and now comes under the London Borough of Hounslow.
7. "The Merry Wives of Windsor" put their husbands' minds at rest by confessing the fun they have had at the expense of Sir John Falstaff and, between them, they arrange what final humiliation?

Answer: A meeting in the woods where the whole of Windsor will watch

Sir John Falstaff was instructed to dress as Herne the Hunter and make his way to the old oak in the forest. Unbeknownst to him, several youths were dressed as fairies and were primed to attack.
8. Mistress Anne Page was part of the final plot by "The Merry Wives of Windsor", but the Host of the revels arranged to help her to get her own way. What did he do?

Answer: Dressed two boys in the two distinctive outfits chosen for her to wear

As Sir John Falstaff was attacked by the fairies, three couples disappeared. Master Slender whisked away the "Anne" dressed in white. Doctor Caius married his "Anne" dressed in green, before discovering that she was in fact a he. Meanwhile, Master Fenton was married to the real Anne.
9. What was the reaction of Sir John Falstaff when he realised what "The Merry Wives of Windsor" had done?

Answer: He laughed and admitted that he had got what he deserved

Sir John Falstaff remained jolly to the end. The worst thing for him was that he had to repay the bribe paid by the husband in disguise.
10. "The Merry Wives of Windsor" ends happily for all concerned. Where does Sir John Falstaff go?

Answer: To the home of Mistress Page to join in the feasting

Sir John Falstaff is still broke at the end of the play and is now horseless, as it was taken to pay back the bribe, but all has been forgiven and he makes his jolly way back to Windsor.
