Answer: The girls didn't have a ride home

This is mentioned in the very beginning of chapter three. Ponyboy says that after the movie they noticed the girls don't have a ride home. Two-Bit offers to walk them home, they want to call their parents, but they all agree to let Two-Bit drive them home.

Ponyboy was talking about how the Greasers and Socs were different. Ponyboy says he thought money might seperate them, but Cherry disagreed. She said that Greasers had a different set of values and the Socs were more sophisticated.

Ponyboy and Cherry were talking when all of a sudden she saw a blue Mustang. She knew their boyfriends would be in it, so they all tried to act natural. The car didn't stop the first time, but it will come back again later in the chapter and it did stop then.

After the blue mustang drove past them, Cherry asked Ponyboy to tell her about Darry. Ponyboy started to get personal and talk about how he thinks Darry hates him. Johnny said that he thought the two of them got along real well and then he snapped ""An' you can just shut your trap, Johnny Cade, 'cause we all know you ain't wanted at home, either. And who could blame them."

Two-Bit, Johnny, and Ponyboy were about to fight the Socs when Cherry stopped them. She said that she hated fights and that they would go home with them if they wouldn't fight.

Johnny and Ponyboy went down to the lot to look at the stars. Ponyboy started to talk about the country when he fell asleep. Johnny has also fallen asleep so when they woke up it was two in the morning.

When Ponyboy came home late, Darry was mad and they started arguing. Then Darry hit Ponyboy and he ran down to the lot. There he met Johnny and they decided to walk to and back from the park.
