1. Why was Cherry so mean to Dally, according to Ponyboy?

Answer: She was afraid of loving him

After the boys had finished gagging, Dally finished explaining that Cherry was a spy for the Socs, but was on their side. He also mentioned how Cherry just about really hates his guts. Ponyboy thought it was probably because she didn't want to fall in love with him. Cherry has a tendancy to fall in love with tough guys who usually can get into trouble.

2. Why did Dally almost gag?

Answer: Johnny said he wanted to turn themselves in to the cops

While they were driving in the very small town of Windrixville, Dally was talking about how the place isn't very exciting. Johnny then said he wanted to go back home and turn themselves in to the cops. Dally was surprised at this because he thought he gave them such a great hide-out - why would he want to turm himself in to the cops?

3. Did Johnny's parents ask about him while he was gone?

Answer: no

Johnny asked if his parents were worried about him and Dally tried to avoid the answer by saying that the "boys" were worried about him. Johnny insisted, and Dally yelled that no they didn't ask about him, but that shouldn't matter because his parents never ask about him and he doesn't care about them either.

While they were driving past the church on their way home they noticed it was on fire. They agreed they had probably started the fire. Some children went into the church and were then trapped when it caught on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny immediately ran inside to save the children.

When Ponyboy was driving to the hospital in an ambulance, he asked why Dally hit him. Jerry, also riding in the car, said it was "Because your back was in flames, that's why."

Ponyboy asked if Johnny and Dally would be okay. Jerry said Dally would be fine, but he badly burnt one arm.

When Darry and Soda came to get Ponyboy from the hospital, Darry was very happy to see Ponyboy alive and not harmed because he didn't want to lose another person. He was so close to his father and he lost him.
