Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Well, let's start at the beginning. Who owns the switchblade?

Answer: Two-Bit

Two-Bit does, in fact, own it. He's very proud of it, and shows it off to every new person he meets. He rarely uses it in fights, though; Two-Bit uses his pocketknife when he needs a legit knife.
2. How did the owner of the switchblade get it?

Answer: He stole it from a hardware store

Besides his black-handled switchblade, Two-Bit was well known for his shoplifting talent.
3. Two chapters after the switchblade is introduced, it is used. When?

Answer: After the drive-in, as the greasers are walking home

Dally, Johnny, Ponyboy, Two-Bit, Cherry, and Marcia are walking to Two-Bit's house to pick up his car so he can drive the girls home when they are confronted by the Socs, who think that the greasers are picking up their girlfriends. Two-Bit pulls his switchblade out to defend himself.
4. The switchblade disappears from the book for a long time, and it is lightly mentioned the next time it's used. What's the situation?

Answer: Two-Bit is sharpening it while Ponyboy does the dishes

After Ponyboy returns home from Windrixville, he's sick and can't come to school yet. Two-Bit volunteers to babysit him. When the switchblade is mentioned, Ponyboy is doing the dishes and Two-Bit is sharpening it.
5. Near the climax of the book, the switchblade becomes really important when a gang member borrows it. Who borrows it?

Answer: Dally

Dally borrows it while he's in the hospital, and puts it under his pillow.
6. Why does whoever borrowed Two-Bit's switchblade borrow it?

Answer: To threaten the nurse with to get out of the hospital

Dally borrows Two-Bit's switchblade to get out of the hospital and to the rumble.
7. After Two-Bit lends his switchblade to its borrower, it is very briefly mentioned. When?

Answer: Before the rumble, as Ponyboy is contemplating the situation

Ponyboy is thinking about the rumble and all of the greasers there. He describes them as lean and slouchy, then comments that most of the guys from the other gangs look nervous about the no-weapons rule. Then, he mentions that unlike the Shepard gang, who fight with whatever they can get their hands on, his gang doesn't hurt anyone and just uses their knives for show. "Like Two-Bit with his black-handled switch."
8. Does Dally use the switchblade at the rumble?

Answer: No

He doesn't. The rumble was just a skin fight (no weapons), and the only reason Dally borrowed it was to get there.
9. The last time the switchblade is seen, Dally and Ponyboy are at the hospital again. What are they using it for?

Answer: To threaten the doctor into letting them see Johnny

Dally uses the switchblade to threaten the doctor, and the doctor lets them in, but only because they were Johnny's friends, not because of the blade.
10. And let's finish up at the end. Two-Bit loses the switchblade. How?

Answer: It is taken away with Dally's body

Dally raised his unloaded gun at the policemen, and they shot him, killing him. When they take his body away, the switchblade is taken with it.
