The Power of the "Sphere" Trivia Quiz

"Sphere" by Michael Crichton is a very suspenseful book about the discovery of an alien artifact on the ocean floor. Remember, this quiz is on the book, not the movie. I hope everyone enjoys it!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Originally, five scientists instead of four were supposed to go on the expedition to the ocean floor. The marine biologist backed out of the whole thing. What was his name?

Answer: Arthur Levine

Marine biologist Arthur Levine was, ironically, seasick. He was supposed to go on the expedition, but he got claustrophobic in the submarine that was to take him down. The scientist team consisted of astrophysicist Ted Fielding, zoologist Beth Halpern, mathematician Harry Adams, and psychologist Norman Johnson.
2. Who was the last person of the group to enter the sphere?

Answer: Norman

Harry was the first person to enter the sphere, and later Norman learned that Beth had also been in the sphere, when he saw it on tape. Ted never went in the sphere, even though he tried very hard to open it. Norman entered the sphere after he survived Beth's attempt to kill him.
3. Beth declared the school of small squid that appeared after Harry returned from the sphere to be a new species. What was unusual about these squid?

Answer: They had six tentacles

Beth discovered what she thought were many new species, but she soon determined that there was no way that these animals could be living as they lacked important features. She later discovered that she had made mistakes due to bad dissections and that the animals were fine.
4. When Norman first descended to the bottom of the ocean in the sub, who did he descend with?

Answer: Ted

Norman, when starting the expedition, went down in the sub with Ted. They were the last to arrive. Both Norman and Ted were nervous on the way down, and Ted compensated for this by spouting a lot of facts about the ocean.
5. The marks on the sphere were proved to be just decorative.

Answer: False

When they first found the sphere, they thought the markings were just for decoration, but Harry deduced that the marks were actually a door in which to enter the sphere. After someone went into the sphere, the marks would change.
6. How did Ted die?

Answer: The giant squid grabbed him

Ted was killed when the giant squid reached into the habitat, grabbed him, and started banging him against the walls. Ted was the only civilian scientist member to die in this book. All of the Navy members were killed. Norman, Beth, and Harry were the only survivors.
7. Who created Jerry, the giant squid?

Answer: Harry Adams

When Harry entered the sphere, it gave him the power to manifest his thoughts into reality. With this power he created the giant squid Jerry. Norman and Beth assumed that Harry did this because he was so scared of squid. The giant squid was definitely one of the most exciting parts in this book.
8. Which of the following was NOT a manifestation brought about by the powers from the sphere?

Answer: A great blue whale

No whale was ever manifested; instead, there was Jerry the giant squid. Harry also created the Navy crewmen and probably the school of shrimp. Beth created the underwater "tornado" out of fear when she was returning to the habitat from wiring the explosives.
9. How did Beth try to kill Norman?

Answer: She locked him in the lab and turned off the air

Beth went crazy from the power and tried to kill Norman by locking him in the lab and turning off his air. Norman escaped by breaking out into the freezing water, where he went to the main hatch and got into his suit.
10. Do you get the sphere open by visualizing the door opening in your mind?

Answer: Yes

The first time the sphere opened was when Beth and Tina were talking about it, and the sphere suddenly opened behind them on a video monitor. From that, Harry was able to figure out that the way to open it was to imagine the door opening in your mind. Very fitting, since it gives you the power to manifest your thoughts. Beth figured this out next, then Norman. Poor Ted never figured this out, although he tried so hard manually to open it.

Afterwards, Norman, Beth, and Harry decided to "forget" that they had this power as it was obvious that the human mind could not handle the ability to manifest one's thoughts.
